“Wielding the Elessar all things grew fair about Galadriel, until the coming of the Shadow to the Forest. But afterwards when Nenya, chief of the Three, was sent to her by Celebrimbor, she needed it (as she thought) no more, and she gave it to Celebrían her daughter, and so it came to Arwen and to Aragorn who was called Elessar.” ~ Unfinished Tales

Celebrian After Being Captured

Celebrian after being Captured by Orcs

Celebrían is the daughter of Celeborn and Galadriel, the wife of Elrond, and the Mother of Elladan, Elrohir, and Arwen.

She was also known as the Lady of Rivendell.  Her daugher, Arwen, would later wed Aragorn/Strider — though she would not witness the union.

Biography

Celebrían, was born around 300 (Second Age).  She chose to stay in Middle-earth after her mother’s refusal to return to Tol Eressëa. Initially residing in Eregion with Galadriel, she later sought refuge in Lórinand between 1350 and 1400 (Second Age). Journeying through Khazad-dûm, Celebrían and Galadriel eventually settled in Rivendell, where she met Elrond. Despite Elrond’s silent affection, in time they wed in 109 (Third Age), resulting in the birth of twins Elladan and Elrohir in 130 (Third Age), followed by a daughter, Arwen, in 241 (Third Age).

Tragedy struck in 2509 (Third Age) when Celebrían, en route to visit her parents, Galadriel and Celeborn, in Lothlórien, fell prey to Orcs in the Redhorn Pass of the Misty Mountains. Tormented and poisoned, she was later rescued by her sons, Elrond healing her wounds. However, the mental and spiritual scars persisted. Overwhelmed by the memories of her ordeal, Celebrían chose to depart Middle-earth, sailing west in the following year. Elladan and Elrohir, bearing deep resentment, joined forces with Aragorn and the Rangers of the North to retaliate against Orcs and servants of Sauron, ensuring their mother’s torment was not forgotten.

Etymology

Celebrían means “Silver-queen” in Sindarin.
From celeb (“silver”) + rían (“queen”)

From Other Writings and Notes

Tolkien made multiple attempts to determine Celebrían’s birth year, primarily in manuscripts focusing on chronology and Elven growth. The Second Age dates he explored include 9, 45, 260, 300, 350, and 850 (see The Nature of MIddle-earth)

In “Concerning Galadriel and Celeborn,” the sole narrative providing a comprehensive history of Middle-earth during the Second Age, both Celebrían and Amroth are initially portrayed as the offspring of Galadriel and Celeborn. However, in later texts, Tolkien assigns Amroth a Sindarin origin.

In the drafts of The Tale of Years of the Third Age, Elrond’s marriage to Celebrían is initially set around 2500 (Third Age), with their children born in the same century. By 2600 (Third Age), a revision depicts her being slain by Orcs instead of captured. The marriage is later adjusted to 2300 (Third Age), and her capture and departure are placed in 2509 (Third Age).
