Standing Stone Games has announced The Wolves of Mordor, the next expansion for Lord of the Rings Online, coming Fall 2026. Three new regions open up inside Mordor itself: Heledhris, Parth Rhavas, and Nan Ogol. The announcement was first reported at MMORPG.com.
Its nice to see a license-holder hew close to what Tolkien wrote. In The Silmarillion, Tolkien gave Sauron a specific role and a specific title during the First Age: he was Morgoth’s chief lieutenant, lord of the isle of Tol-in-Gaurhoth, and the master of werewolves. He bred and commanded Draugluin, the sire of werewolves, and when Huan the Hound of Valinor confronted him, Sauron took wolf-form himself to fight. He was, in Tolkien’s own words, the “lord of werewolves.” That is canonical text from Tolkien, not a creative team’s invention for a screen adaptation.

Draugrim
Conversely, Amazon’s The Rings of Power had the Second Age to work with, an era full of Tolkien’s actual writing about Sauron’s deceits, his forging of the Rings, and his seduction of the Numenoreans. Instead, the showrunners invented original backstory from scratch: a character called Halbrand, Sauron wandering the Southlands as an amnesiac, and a whole invented mythology that had nothing to do with what Tolkien wrote. LOTRO is going back to the actual texts and building gameplay around them.
On the systems side, the expansion brings an account-wide “Survival Instinct” progression path that tracks your journey through the new regions and unlocks abilities as you go, in place of traditional MMO leveling. There is also a “Neighbor” mechanic that lets players build relationships with NPCs through daily interactions, quests, and gifts. Three- and six-player instances are included at launch, with a raid following later.
No exact release date has been confirmed yet beyond Fall 2026.
