A new competitive board game is bringing the War of the Ring to the tabletop in a focused head-to-head format. Wargamer recently published an exclusive interview with the design team behind The Lord of the Rings: The King’s Gambit, an upcoming two-player deckbuilding game scheduled for release in 2027.
The game adapts the tactical mechanics made popular by Star Wars: The Deckbuilding Game and applies them directly to the Middle-earth setting. Players choose a side in the central conflict of the Third Age. One player commands the Free Peoples, rallying the forces of Gondor, Rohan, and the Elves to defend the West. The opponent takes control of the Shadow, deploying the armies of Mordor, Isengard, and the Haradrim.

Instead of moving miniatures across a massive map, players fight for control over specific strongholds. The designers revealed that iconic locations like Minas Tirith, Helm’s Deep, and Barad-dur serve as the primary battlegrounds for these card-driven conflicts. Winning these engagements requires careful resource management, timing your unit deployment, and strategic bluffing to outmaneuver the opponent.
The publisher commissioned completely original artwork to depict the major battles and characters of the legendarium. Players will see familiar heroes like Aragorn, Gandalf, and Theoden face off against dark champions including the Witch-king, Saruman, and the Mouth of Sauron.
