Syzygy Forge has opened a Kickstarter for The Lord of the Rings: The Helm of the Witch-king of Angmar, an officially licensed 1:1 collectible designed in collaboration with Tolkien illustrator John Howe. The campaign went live August 18 and has already cleared its $75,000 goal. As of Friday it sat at about $108,000 from 237 backers, with the clock running through September 17.
This is not a film-prop replica. Syzygy is selling it as part of a John Howe Collection licensed through Middle-earth Enterprises and drawn, they say, from Howe’s illustrations of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings as books. Howe was painting Middle-earth in calendars and dust jackets long before Peter Jackson hired him as a conceptual designer. The films borrowed his eye.
The 1:1 helm sits on a sculpted stone base. An early-bird run of 100 is already gone at $499; the standard Collector Edition is $599, limited to 300 worldwide, with a numbered certificate. Higher pledges add a hand-signed Howe print. There is a 1:4 desk version at $99, capped at 555. Estimated deliveries are March and May 2027.
Middle-earth collectibles are a crowded market, and most of them are chasing the movies. A licensed Howe object aimed at the illustrations is rarer, and closer to what this site is for. Whether the silhouette ends up looking like Weta’s Witch-king is almost a separate argument. The books never gave us a workshop drawing. Howe has been doing that work for decades.
