Britain’s Royal Mint has unveiled an official Lord of the Rings 50p coin to mark the 25th anniversary of Peter Jackson’s film trilogy — and it features a remarkable hidden detail that Tolkien fans will appreciate.
The commemorative coin showcases the One Ring with Elvish lettering around its edge, inscribed with the Black Speech verse: “One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them.” But the real magic happens when light strikes the coin’s surface.
In a UK coinage first, the Royal Mint has employed special caustic technology that reveals a hidden image when the coin is tilted or illuminated: the all-seeing Eye of Sauron. The effect mirrors the famous scene in The Fellowship of the Ring when Gandalf throws the Ring into Bilbo’s fireplace to reveal its true nature.
Rebecca Morgan, Director of Collector Services at The Royal Mint, described the coin as “a remarkable feat of British craftsmanship, and one that fans will have to see to believe.”
This 50p piece is the first in a series of seven coins celebrating the trilogy. Two coins will be released for each film — The Fellowship of the Ring in 2026, The Two Towers in 2027, and The Return of the King in 2028 — allowing collectors to build the complete set over the anniversary period.
The coins are available now from the Royal Mint website, with prices starting around £20-30 for the light-reactive collector’s edition. Limited edition versions in silver and gold are also available for serious collectors.
The release comes at a busty time for new Middle-earth IP. Andy Serkis is directing and starring in The Hunt for Gollum, Rings of Power Season 3 arrives later this year, and Warhorse Studios is developing a new RPG set in Tolkien’s legendarium.
