The identity of the Dark Wizard has been one of the “most” discussed questions hanging over The Rings of Power since the character surfaced in Rhûn during Season 2–but every single prediction has essentially come true . At San Diego Comic-Con 2026, showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay sent the clearest signal yet. Speaking to GamesRadar+, the pair confirmed that the figure played by Ciarán Hinds will be unmasked early in Season 3, offering a simple summary of what’s coming: “The masks are off.” Yay.

Speculation has run wide since Season 2. Saruman, the Blue Wizards, some other Istari entirely — every name in Tolkien’s order of five has been floated, but everything points to Hinds portraying a Blue Wizard.
Tolkien’s own later writing is actually useful context here. In Unfinished Tales and The Peoples of Middle-earth, he wrote that the two Blue Wizards, Alatar and Pallando (also called Morinehtar and Rómestámo), arrived in Middle-earth far earlier than their three colleagues and traveled east, deep into territory the main narrative of the Third Age barely touches. Their mission was to stir up resistance to Sauron among the peoples of the East. Tolkien was uncertain about their fate and wrote multiple, sometimes contradictory notes on whether they succeeded or failed. That ambiguity is exactly the kind of open space a TV production can work inside without obviously contradicting the books. A Blue Wizard in Rhûn during the Second Age fits that space reasonably well.
Saruman fits far less cleanly. Curunír was the head of the White Council in the Third Age and had no role as a dark ruler operating in Rhûn during the Second Age. Casting him in that position would require the show to invent a biographical chapter Tolkien never wrote and that sits awkwardly against everything we know about his character arc–but of course, that hasn’t stopped them from ignoring Tolkien’s story and going off on their own during all the other plot points of The Rings of Power.

Season 3 has wrapped principal photography, and Payne and McKay have described it as a more focused, faster-moving season than its predecessors. Resolving the wizard question early rather than dragging it across multiple episodes suggests they’ve learned something from the pacing criticism Season 2 received. Whether the answer they’ve chosen actually honors Tolkien’s conception of the Istari is the part we’ll have to wait and see.
