At San Diego Comic-Con last week, showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay confirmed that The Rings of Power Season 3 will open after a five-year time jump, picking up in the immediate aftermath of the destruction of Eregion that closed Season 2. The news was first reported by GamesRadar+ from the show’s Hall H panel.
Season 3 premieres November 11, 2026, on Amazon Prime Video, dropping its first four episodes simultaneously then releasing 2 each week for 2 weeks — the entire season will be released in the span of 3 weeks. According to McKay, the five-year gap is designed to give the storytelling a “jolt of adrenaline” by thrusting viewers directly into the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, rather than spending screen time on the slow military buildup that followed Eregion’s fall.
During those five off-screen years, they decided to do away with the subtly odd underhanded relationships between the good and evil characters. Sauron operates as an overt villain, establishing his seat of power in Mordor and beginning construction on Barad-dur while focusing his efforts on forging the One Ring. To the west, Elrond leads the surviving Elves to establish the valley refuge of Imladris, setting the foundation for Rivendell. The showrunners indicated that the time jump also allows younger mortal characters, such as Isildur and Theo, to mature into their next phases.
Unsurpisingly, this is in contrast to Tolkien’s canon, where in Appendix B of The Lord of the Rings, these events compressed into this five-year window actually spanned over a century. Sauron forged the One Ring around SA 1600, Eregion was destroyed in SA 1697, and Elrond established Rivendell as a stronghold during the retreat that same year. The War of the Elves and Sauron then raged until SA 1701, when the forces of Numenor arrived to drive Sauron back into Mordor.
While The Rings of Power has compressed the Second Age timeline into a single human lifespan, skipping five years ahead allows the series to skip forward into more obvious conflict with Elves already entrenched in a war for survival.
