If accurate, that’s a 2+ year gap since Season 2 wrapped in late 2024 — a significant hiatus for a streaming series that’s already battled audience retention issues. Industry analysts are less optimistic: Forbes suggested in December 2025 that February 2027 is more likely, given the extensive post-production required for the show’s ambitious visuals. GamesRadar speculated August 2027 could even be on the table if the production timeline mirrors Season 2.
The show, which chronicles the forging of the Rings of Power and the rise of Sauron during Middle-earth’s Second Age, has been a lightning rod since its 2022 debut. Lavish production values met fierce debate over lore fidelity, but that wasn’t enough to escape the shadow of its polarizing first season.
Now it faces a new challenge: competition from within Tolkien’s own universe. The Hunt for Gollum, set for December 2027, has dominated recent headlines with major casting announcements and Peter Jackson’s involvement.
