Wind in the West – Chapter 1: Why?

by Dec 3, 2003Stories

As usual Kimberly Jamison was reading in the library at lunch. She was afraid to go into the playground because the kids always teased her. They teased her for no more a reason than she was tall. She had light brown hair neatly cut at her shoulders and shaped around her face, a double pierce (two earrings in each ear) and beautiful hazel eyes. She was very pretty. She was the tallest in her grade, except for one guy who was the same height, and she was taller than most of the year 8 people. Even the year 9 people teased her, though some of them didnt even know her name. So she had no friends, therefore you would guess that she was quite lonely.

The school bell rang loud and clear. “Damn!” she said to herself. She put the book away, her favourite book, The Neverending Story. She sighed to herself. “Why?” she softly whispered, “Why me God? Why do they tease me? Why did you make me this way? Why cant I be like Bastian, and stumble upon a Fantasy World, where I was looked up to, and spoken to with reverence? I wish I had the Magic Amulet, and i could make all my wishes come true.”

She was a couple of metres away from the classroom door, when she felt something she had been dreading: a hand grab her shoulder, none too softly. She bit her lip to stop from crying out as the fingernails of the hand dug into her flesh, and made her start to bleed.

“Hey! What do you think you’re doing?!” she cried out desperately, trying in vain to sound brave. She spun around, causing the fingernails to rip out of her skin, as she cried out, howling with pain. She didnt dare look at the bully in the eyes. She didnt need to. She knew. Carole Richards, a menace to everyone in the school, and she loved to pick on Kim (for so I will call her). Now here wasone person who was taller than Kim, yet by a few inches. You see, Kim was 5 foot 8.

“I have been looking all over for you!” she spat in Kim’s face.
“Where have you been?! Playing Barbie Dolls with your friends?! Oh! Thats right! you dont have any friends!”

“Shut up you little witch!” Kim screamed in her face, surprised at her own boldness. Carole looked at her with genuine astonishment, which soon turned into a menacing grin.

“Well, SOMEBODY has a bit of a temper today—-” she suddenly stopped, as the teacher, Mrs Birches, came striding up. Carole put on her best Academy Award act, and showed Mrs Birches a dazzling smile. ” Hi Mrs Birches! how are you?”
she replied, still smiling sweetly at the teacher.

“Shouldnt you two be in class?” Mrs Birches replied sternly.

“Oh, yes. we were just having a nice little chat, whilst walking to class.”

“Well keep moving!”

Just then the second bell rang, meaning they were supposed to be in class.

“You’re lucky, Jamison! Saved by the precious bell, hm?! Well, we will see!” she walked away, heading towards her classroom. Kim breathed a sigh of relief.

“Kim, have you done your homework yet?” came her mothers voice from the kitchen. She was sitting down, munching on chocolate biscuits, and watching the Simpsons. “Yes, mum.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes Mum.”

“Have you done everythi—–“

Mrs Jamison was cut off by Kim’s reply. “Yes Mum! I am done! And I am sure of it!” Kim was so angry. And she was so strangely tired, even though it was 7:30 at night. She decided to go to bed. But when she got into bed, she just couldnt sleep. She could hear carole’s voice in her head, again and again, saying “Oh! Thats right! You dont have any friends!”
She finally fell asleep at about 11:00, with tears in her eyes.

The next morning, Kimberly woke up with a start, at 6:30 in the morning, with the sound of her alarm beeping loudly in the backround. “Great! Another day of school to live through! I am gonna die!” she said to herself, through her drowsiness. She got up, got dressed and had breakfast. “Stupid Public schools! The kids tease you for everything! Far out!”

In the car on the way to school, she was strangely silent. Her mother noticed. “Whats wrong honey?” she said in that soothing voice of hers that made it irresistable to explain what was wrong.

“Well, there was a really mean girl at school yesterday, and she said that i didnt have friends.” She said between sobs. Then she broke out, wailing like a little girl who didnt get her own way. Her mother pulled up outside the school and lent over to caress her daughter. ” Oh honey, i am so sorry, but you have to go to class. you’re already late. But just remember this, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

“With that, Kimberly grabbed her bag, and kissed her mum goodbye.

“I’ll see you this afternoon, ok darling?”

“Ok Mum” Kim replied.

In class, Kim noticed that there was a new boy in the class. Not only that, but he was reading her other favourite book, The Lord of the Rings. He was also really tall, probably an inch taller than Kimberly. She also noticed that the boys and girls around him were snickering. She wondered why. After class, she went up to him to ask his name.

“Hi, my name is Tim, whats yours?”

“hi, um, my name is Kimberly, but you can call me Kim if you want.”

“Cool. Um, do you know where our next class is?”

“Yeah. We’re in the same class, so you can come with me if you want.”

“Yeah that’d be cool.”

It was lunch, time to go to the library. On her way, she saw Tim and a couple of other boys. But the boys were pushing him into the mud and calling him names. Kim decided to go up to the boys. As soon as they saw her they left Tim and walked over to her.

“Why do you have to be so mean?! Leave him alone!”

“Oooh, standing up for your boyfriend, are you?!” one of them said, Andrew, the leader of the gang. They all snickered as Kim clenched her fists.

“He’s not my boyfriend!” She screamed in their faces.

“Kimi and Tim, sitting in a tree. k-i-s-s-i-n-g-! First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes a baby, sittin’ in a carriage!”
Kimberly ran off, with tears in her eyes, heading towards the library. She got out The Neverending Story and started to read. Just then Tim came up, and Kimberly looked up at him with her tear-stained face.

“I just came to say I am really sorry about that. You didnt need to stand up for me.” he said, with a pleading look in his eyes.

“Thats ok. it wasnt your fault. besides, i am used to it” she replied, with a sudden softness of heart.

“Where do you live?” he asked.

“In Menai, just down the road.”

Wow! Thats where I live! What street?”

“In Marsden Rd.”

“Wow! Me too! What number?”

“Number 3.”

“I am number 10. do you walk to and from school?”

“Yeah, except for this morning coz’ i was late.”

“Oh, well i will see you walking home this afternoon. That is, if you want to walk home together?”

Yeah, sure! That’d be cool. see you then?”

“See ya then.”

he left Kimberly with an astonished look on her face. “Ok, that was totally freaky!” she said to herself. she kept reading her book with a happy mood.

Through the next couple of weeks, Tim and Kimberly became good friends. One day, whilst walking home from school with Tim, She noticed that her car wasnt in the drive-way. “Oh Great! my Mum isnt home! And I dont have a key!”

“Well you could come over to my house of you want to.” said Tim, with a look of hope in his eyes. Well, Kimberly was quite happy to, for he was pretty good looking, so she thought, and they were practically best friends, so why not?

“Yeah, ok. if your parents dont mind.”

“Nah, They wont! Come on! We can watch a movie if ya want?”

“Yeah, that’d be sweet. What movies do you have?”

“Well we have the Lord of the Rings, if ya wanna watch that. I know its your favourite book and all.”

“Well one of them. But I dont realy like the movie coz’ it is absolutely nothing like the book. I mean its a good movie and all, but that really frustrates me. What else do you have?”

“Well, We have the Matrix?”

“Oh, really? I watch it every time I can! i have it on DVD! It is my absolute Favourite movie in the whole world!”

“I take it you wanna watch that then?”

“Only if you wanna.”

“Yeah, its my favourite movie too!”

They walked into his house and Tim went to tell his mum that Kim and himself were going to watch a movie. He came back.

“You know, you can put your bag down. just chuck it anywhere.”

“Umm, ok.”

“You hungry?”

“Yeah, Kinda.”

“Alright. do you like chocolate biscuits?”

“Do I ever!”

Tim went to get the biscuits whilst Kim sat on the couch. He came back, turned on the movie and sat down next to Kim.
“Hmm, this is nice” she thought, whilst the movie was playing.

The movie finished.
“Oh, rats! I’ve gotta go home now! Um, thanks for letting me come over and stuff, that was real nice. Sorry i kinda have to rush home like this, but my mum will kill me!”

She got up and grabbed her bag. Tim walked her to the door, and they said goodbye to each other.

“See ya tomorrow morning?” Tim asked.

“Yeah, sure. See ya!”

Kimberly raced home, just as her mum pulled into the drive-way.

“Oh, Hi mum!” she said, hoping her mum wouldnt get angry.

“Hi sweety, where have you been? i figure you’ve been somewhere since you have your bag on your back and you came racing down the street like a mad woman. am I right?”

“Uh, yes, I guess.”

“So, where were you?”

“Um, at a friend’s house.”

“Would this friend’s name happen to be Tim, by any chance?”

“How did You know?”

“Kim, you’ve told me before. And I am not angry, just so long as nothing happened.”

“Of course not Mum!”

“Well, good. Lets go inside and I will start making dinner.”

The next day, when Kimberly arrived home from school, she went up to her room and found a letter on her bed. “What’s this?” she thought. She opened it and found that it was from Tim. “An Invitation? for me?” she said, reading the letter. “To go to 17 Marsden Rd? didnt even know there was one. When do I have to go? tomorrow? At 3:30? okay!”

When she got home from school, she got changed into some different clothes other than her school uniform, and walked down the street. when she got to 16 Marsden Rd, she couldn’t find number 17 and wondered if he had written the right address. “Well, where number 17 is supposed to be, there is a park.” But there was something that drew her towards the park. When She walked over, she found that some plumbers wee doing some work in the sewerage tunnel, but they were on a break. Something drew her towards the hole. She peered over the edge and saw a ladder going down. “Well, it doesnt look too dirty” she said to herself. She had this sudden urge to climb down and explore, but then she thought, “No, i’ve gotta meet Tim here. i cant just go!” But the urge was stronger than ever. She couldnt resist. “Maybe i’ll have just a little explore around, i wont go for long.” she climbed down the ladder and walked along for a little while, in total darkness. then suddenly, there was a wall in front of her and a ladder going up, and she could see the end of the ladder at the top, with a bright light above, so she could see nothing of the surrounds up the top. Unless she climbed up the ladder. She decided to climb up and just have a look around and then come back. so she climbed up and walked through the hole, and lo! there was a forest surrounding her. “Whoa, THat is way freaky! there is no forests anywhere near where i live!” She turned around to climb back down the hole, but the hole had dissappeared! “What in the world is going on here?!” she cried out, starting to get a little afraid. Suddenly a hand grabbed her shoulder and she was reminded of That day when Carole had done the same. “Don’t Carole! This isn’t funny!” The hand spun her a round and she saw the most gruesome face glaring down at her, with sharp yellow fangs and a stench that came forth from the monster. “Aaaahh!!!” she screamed, “An orc!! but wait that cant be right! orcs aren’t real!! I’m dreaming! I’m Dreaming!! Let Go of me!!”

Suddenly, everything went dark.
