Ch 3
Recap: Mike had just sung a crazy country song to a hall of elves, and the four cousins were cracking up out side. They then calm down and start to wonder how the heck they are in ME….
Kaitlyn was stumped. This sounds alot like one of those fan fics Megan is always raving about. Wait! she shook her head. Fan fics?
“Uh…. Meg?”
Megan turned to look at her sister, “What?”
“What’s a..uh.. ‘fan-fic?'”
“Its…” Megan was interrupted by One Borimir, who had come out to see what these strange childern were up to. “O hi, Borimir.”
“Greetings. Um…..” Borimir looked a little awkward.
“What’s up?” Brian asked.
This confused poor Borimir even more. “Uh…. the sky?”
Mike cracked up. He couldn’t help it. The pure ‘confuzzelment’, as his brother would say, on Borimir’s face was just too much. “The-the sky!!” he giggled.
Megan glared at Mike. “Shut up, Mikey. That’s an old joke, any ways.” then, turning to Borimir, she asked: “So what do you need, any ways?”
“Uh.. I was wondering.. what that was that, your cousin?, was singing.” The way he said it , it sounded more like a question than what it really was. His sentence ended high pitched.
“Oooooo…..” Said Megan, ignoring her laughing friends, “See that’s a type of music called country….”
Kaitlyn squirmed in her chair at Elrond’s council. These things, had been made for the pure discomfort of it’s occupant. It was cold, and hard, and very, very, straight backed. But the seat wasn’t big enough that you could scoot forward and not have to sit back on the back thingy and slouch a comfortable slouch. Instead, you had to sit army-style. Which, of course, was not very comfertable.( Well, at least for Kaitlyn it wasn’t) Kaitlyn was tempted to just sit on the floor. She had no time to voice her thoughts, however, because the council began.
“Strangers from distant lands, Friends of Old: You’ve been summoned here to anwer the threat of Mordor.” Elrond began, in a very serious voice. Kaitlyn stopped squirming, and looked up. ” Middle-earth stands apon the brink of distruction; none can escape it; you will untite or you will fall.” Kaitlyn looked around to see the other’s reactions. Borimir and a bunch of people she didn’t reconize looked troubled, and her cousins and sisters all had puckered eyebrows, as though they were struggling to remember something.
Elrond continued, ” Each race is bound to this fate, this one doom,” the elf’s deep voice echoed across the courtyard, filling it. “Bring forth the ring, Frodo.” Kaitlyn turned to see who Elrond was alking to. There, at the farthest end of the seats, wa a little man, with dark hair and large eyes. The strangest thing abut him, though, besides his size, was his feet. They were covered in brown, curly hair. He came forth, and deposited a small, golden ring onto a pedestul in the middle of the courtyard. There was a general intake of breath.
Megn leaned foreward, instantly interested. it was a beautiful thing, so… bright, so… golden. Megan wanted to touch it. Bad. Without realizing what she was doing, she stretched out her hand. “Easy there, “a gruff voice said to her right. She turned to see who it was. It was that old man, the one clothed in grey. The one that had been so protective of the small man-the hobbit-she remembered. He laid a hand on her arm. Megan blinked, and suddenly she felt-her self again. She saw the old man grimly smile. “That’s right, ” he said, “Forget about that thing.” Megan nodded, but she did not forget. She merely turned to look t the ring once more. It was so beautiful…
Brian was unaware of what was happening with Megan to the right of him. He was staring at the others of the council, for they had begun to murmer. “So it is true, ” he heard Borimir say. “It is a gift,” Borimir continued, ” A gift to the foes of Mordor!” Borimir stood up, and began to pace, looking at each of the council in turn.” Why not use this ring? Long has my father, the steward of Gondor, kept the forces of mordor at bay, by the blood of our people, are your lands, kept safe. Give Gondor the weapon of the enemy, let us use it against him!”
Megan began to nod, but a dark man, the same one that she had seen staring at that elven woman the night before in the hall of fire, interrupted. “You cannot weild it, none of us can!” Borimir turned to him, “The one ring answers to Saroun alone! He has no other master!” the man said with conviction.
“And what, “asked Borimir, “Would a ranger know of this?”
An Elf, who was sitting next to Mike, suddenly rose to his feet, “This is no mere ranger! This is Aragorn, son of Arathorn, you owe him your alligence.”
Borimir turned, looking disbeleivingly at Aragorn, “Aragorn? This, is Isildurs heir?”
Mike looked a Borimir strangley. Why was he being so rude and disbeleiving?
The elf continued, “An heir to the throne of Gondor!”
Aragorn gestured at the elf, seeming embarassed, “Havodad, Legolas.”
Kaitlyn stared at Aragorn. Gondor? she wondered, What the heck is that?
“Gondor has no King,” Borimir said to Legolas, then he started walking towards his chair, “Gondor needs no King.”
Brian shook his head. What was his problem?
Borimir stat down and glared at Aragorn, and Megan glared at him too. She wasn’t sure why she was mad at him, but a small voice whispered in her mind: How DARE he challenge Borimir! How DARE he! He knows nothing of the ring!
The old man next to her spoke, “Aragorn is right, We cannot use it. ” Megan turned to glare at him too. He met her eyes calmly, but there was a shot of worry in his eyes.
“You have only one choice,” Elrond stood up, “The ring must be destroyed.”
“Wel what are we waiting for?” a dwarf stood up and rushed at the ring, axe at ready.
“No!” Megan shreiked, whilst the others of the council winced.
For a second Megan saw it: a great firey eye. Then she saw the dwarf, sprawled on the ground, his axe shattered, but the ring-the ring was fine.
Kaitlyn, on impulse, rushed forwad to help the dwarf up.
“The ring cannot be destroyed, Gimli, son of Gloin, by any craft we here posses.” Elrond spoke, “The ring was made in the fires of Mount Doom, only there, can it be unmade. It must betaken deep into Mordor and cast back into the firey Chasm fromm which it came. One of you, must do this.” Every one was back in their seats by now, and the silence was total.
Finnaly, it was broken, by Borimir.”One does not simply walk into Mordor.”It’s black gates, are guarded by more than just orcs. There is evil there, that does not sleep. And the great eye,” Kaitlyn, who had been staring at Frodo, noticed him go rigid, ” is ever watchful. Tis a barren wasteland, riddled with fire, and ash, and dust. The very air you breathe, is a poisonous fume. Not with ten thousand men could you do this. It is folly.” He was breathing hard, as though remembering some awful memory.
Kaitlyn felt a stap of annoyance at Borimir. Did he always have to be so negative?
“Have you heard nothing that Lord Elrond just said? The ring must be destroyed!” Legolas was standing again.
“And I suppose you think your the one to do it!” cried Gimli.
Borimir stood up, “And if we fail, what then, what happens if Saroun takes back what is his?”
Gimli also stood, “” I will be dead before I see the ring, in the hands of an elf!”
Every one rose, and began to yell. Megan headed straight for Legolas. “Why can’t you just listen to Borimir!!” she cried, “How do you know that it can’ be wielded?!Have YOU tried? Has any one you know tried?”
Legolas seemed to be trying to control his anger, but he failed miserably, “How could you understand, mortal!! You are younger than about everone in this council! You have never seen war! You never saw Necromacer come to life in your very own woods! You didn’t see the first war of the Ring!! Hw coud ou understand!” He whirled around to face Gimli, who was shouting: “Never trust an Elf!!”
“I will take it!” The voice reverberated across the courtyard, stopping everyone in their tracks. The voice belonged to the little man, Frodo. “I will take the ring to Mordor, ” he suddenly looked shy in the spotlight, “Though, I do not know the way.”
The old grey man stepped forward. “I will help you bear this burden, Frodo Baggin, as long as it is yours to bear.” He stood behind frodo, and rested a hand on his shoulder.
Aragorn stepped forward as well, “Upon my ife or death, if I can protect you, I will. You have my sword!” He knelt before Frodo, like a knight swearing fealty to his lord.
Legolas brushed past Megan, “And you have my bow!”
Gimli stepped foreward, “And my axe. ” Kaitlyn was sure that she saw Legolas mouth: “Eru help us”.
“You carry the fate of us all, little one. If this is indeed the will of the council, then Gondor will see it done.” Borimir joined the group.
“He!” Suddenly another hobbit rushed out of the hedges and stood besides Frodo, crossing his arms. “Mr. Frodo’s not goin’ any where without me!”
“No, it is hardly possible to seperate you two, even when he is invited to a secret council and you are not.”
“Wait! We’re coming too!” two MORE hobbits rushed in, a joined their fellows, “You’ll have to send us home, tied up in a sack to stop us!” One said, crossing his arms, and staring rebelliously at Elrond.
“Any way, “said the other, “You need people of intelligence on this sort of mission. Quest . Thing.”
“We’ll go!” both Megan and Brian said in unison.
“I can fight!” said Brian, pleadingly,” I took some fencing lessons, and I just kill in fist fights! Lemme go, please!”
“You can go, I suppose,” said Elrond cautiously, “But the girl cannot.”
“Hey! Why not!?” Megan cried.
Elrond sighed, “It’s a dangerous journey for a women, much less a girl,”
“So?! It’s gonna be dangerous for them too!”
“No.” He said firmly.
“C’mon Megan, let’s go back to our rooms,” Mike tugged on her arm, and she lt him lead her away. But as she left, she heard Elrond say: “So be it. You will be the fellowship of the Ring.”
“Great, ” another voice said, ‘Where are we going?”
