He took her arm sharply and led her passed the courtyard and the great hall through a dark ally where an iron gate lay. The guards passed to let him through. They descended a series of steps coming into underground chambers where poor souls lay locked up despaired in a dark and dreary place. Elenya’s heart wept for those inside the bars, but then she caught sight of the very last one. She broke free of the Prince and raced to the cell gripping the bars with her hands. Legolas faced her. His eyes turned to the Prince. He asked sharply, “Mani nae lle umien?” ((What have you done))
“Uuma dela cala’quessir.” ((Do not worry high elf))
Elenya did not understand their words as they spoke to each other in elvish. But she knew by the way Legolas sounded, that he was very angry at the Prince.
“Kela!” ((Go away)) Legolas said. “Amin feuya ten’ lle! ((You disgust me))
The Prince laughed. “Lasta lalaithamin! Antolle ulua sulrim,” he said arrogantly grinning. ((Listen to my laughter. Much wind pours from your mouth)) “Dina, Legolas! Uuma dela mellonaminn. The time is coming soon. I’narr en gothrim glinuva nuin I’anor.” ((Be silent, Legolas. Don’t worry. The bones of our foes will gleam in the sun))
Legolas seemed enraged. “Aiya! Amin uuma malia! Kela! Lle naa haran e’ nausalle, Mardil. Kela!” ((Oh! I don’t care! Go away! You are a king only in your imagination))
Elenya interrupted. “What are you saying?”
Legolas said to the Prince, “Kela! Leave me alone with her.”
“I do not understand why she does not know elvish.”
“Leave her alone. She is not a normal elf.”
“I see nothing abnormal,” he said eyeing her lustily.
“If I were out of this prison, I would poke out your eyes for looking at her like that. Utinu en lokirim! ((son of snakes)) Leave!”
“Relax, Legolas. I will leave but for the moment. I do this not for your sake but for hers.”
The Prince turned and walked back up the stairs leaving Elenya alone with Legolas. He did not need to stay in the room to be able to watch them. He took the stone from his pocket and uttered a simple spell only known to him. He watched the discussion with interest yet disgust. Elenya too his hands through the bars wanting to touch him. He brushed a hand across her cheek.
“You still look as beautiful as ever, my star,” he said.
“You look terrible,” she said softly looking at him. He looked as though he hadn’t slept in many nights.
“I have had nightmares. They become so great, I do not wish to sleep anymore.”
“Do you fear them?”
“I fear for what happens to Middle Earth and to you in them.”
“What do you mean?”
“I cannot tell you here. What has he done to you?”
“Nothing actually. He has approached me many times. The only time it became strange when it seemed like he was reading my thoughts. He destroyed an image of you from my memory. I know he did. I was thinking of you, and that is why he destroyed it. I now cannot remember what we were doing or where we were.”
“Try Elenya. You must not become his servant. He will do that. The Prince has much power over the mind. You must not let him conquer you or you will become vulnerable.”
“But he cannot conquer my heart. Right?”
“That is so, but-“
“He claims to have a stronger will than mine. That isn’t true.”
“You are very stubborn, Elenya. You will have to let go of your stubbornness in this situation. Hold onto your love and loyalty to Middle Earth.”
“What about to you?”
“It may have to be used later. But for now wait and see.”
“Do you know what he will do?”
“Nay, I do not. I can only see what is happening in my dreams, and I do not wish to tell you.”
“This is so odd. In the books, it said you went to the Sea with Gimli. How can you still be here?”
“Elenya, I did go to the Sea.”
“What?” she asked in confusion.
“I departed to the Sea after remaining in Ithilen for three years. Gimli saw my sad state. He has long been my greatest friend. Four years I spent in agony dwelling there in Valinor. It helped me a little to see my old friends Elrond, Galadriel, Gandalf, and even Frodo. But I returned to Middle Earth to Ithilen for Eru told me that is where you would come. Gimli returned with me. He did not want to be the only dwarf in Valinor who didn’t know any of the elves. He said he had to keep me in one piece. I miss him.”
“So do I. What can I say Legolas? How can I get you out of here?”
“The Prince has a heart of stone. He will see me rot in here till the end of time.”
“I will not let that happen.”
“Elenya remember, do not make the mistake you made with Agroth.”
“What mistake? I killed him did I not with your help?”
“Mardil is different. Agroth could not threaten Middle Earth not until he had obtained the Firestone. He would not have dared make a move without his master’s consent either. Mardil the Prince has no master. He is his own master. And his mind has been poisoned by magic. He wants Middle Earth. He wants to destroy it. And he will.”
“He said to me that he wants to control it.”
“No Elenya. He comes not to rule it, but to destroy it. Destroy everyone and everything we hold dear. He shall turn Rivendell and Lorien into Easterling weapon houses. The forests will fall. Minas Tirith will seem as his great playground. Remember your loyalty to Middle Earth, Elenya.”
“But what of my loyalty to you?”
“That shall come later. I love you. Whatever happens, I love you, and you know that.”
“I do,” she said squeezing his hand.
He squeezed her hand back. For a moment, he simply gazed at her. She was his star. She seemed a twinkling jewel in the darkness of his cell. Her dark hair fell about her shoulders, her blue eyes gleamed like two sapphires in the dark.
“You have brightened my day. I am glad you came.”
She seemed intimidated by the bars. She gripped at them angrily.
“What is it?” he asked smiling. “You want a kiss?”
She stopped. “It’s just like you to joke at a time like this,” she smiled.
“Well do you?” he asked grinning.
“Guilty,” she replied.
He took his hand bringing his middle and index finger to his lips. He slowly brought the fingers to her lips as well. She made the same motion. It felt like the most wonderful kiss she had ever received from him. They stood staring at each other for a long moment. It was just them. She did not even hear the footsteps of the Prince coming behind her. He grasped her arm sharply.
“It is time.”
“Namarie, Elenya.” He mouthed the words ‘I love you’ to her, and she did the same as the Prince practically dragged her away.
Once they were outside, she shrugged his grip off of her.
“Get away from me!”
“The only reason you saw him now was because I allowed you to. I suggest you behave if you ever wish to see him again.”
“Nothing you say can upset me Prince. I am not one of your servants either.”
“No you are my prisoner my hostage and I will do with you what I wish.”
A line came into Emilie’s head from an old movie. She debated on whether to walk away or just say it to his face.
“Do your worst,” she said bravely standing before him.
“I will but later.”
He left her to go to her room where she slept fitfully satisfied that she was allowed to see Legolas.
