“I remember laying in bed reciting words from the Fellowship of the Ring.”

Emilie looked at the clock. It was midnight. She lay back down upon her pillow but did not close her eyes. She was completely undone. She felt nothing. Not happiness, not sadness, not grief or regret; absolutely nothing. She still of course missed him, but she knew wishing could not bring him back. Legolas was dead. She needed to accept that. She walked out of the house onto her back porch looking up at the still dark sky full of stars. She heard the sounds of the ocean and looked upon the waves the moonlight reflecting off of them. Emilie slowly walked down the stairs and let her bare feet touch the cold sand. She heard nothing but the sounds of the waves. The silence drove her mad so she broke it with a song.

“And now I’m all alone again
Nowhere to turn, no one to go to
Without a home, without a friend,
Without a face to say hello to.
And now the night is near
Now I can make believe he’s here.

Sometimes I walk alone at night
When everybody else is sleeping
I think of him and then I’m happy
With the company I’m keeping
The city goes to bed
And I can live inside my head.

On my own
Pretending he’s beside me
All alone, I walk with him till morning
Without him
I feel his arms around me
And when I lose my way I close my eyes
And he has found me

In the rain the pavement shines like silver
All the lights are misty in the river
In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me for ever and forever

And I know it’s only in my mind
That I’m talking to myself and not to him
And although I know that he is gone
Still I say, there’s a way for us

I love him
But when the night is over
He is gone, the river’s just a river
Without him the world around me changes
The trees are bare and everywhere
The streets are full of strangers

I love him
But every day I’m learning
All my life I’ve only been pretending
Without him will my world keep turning?
This world that’s full of happiness
That I have never known!

I love him
I love him
I love him
But only on my own.”

But it wasnt enough. Far off distance memories hung like thorns in her mind. She wished to forget them all. The air seemed full of them. Songs floated through her mind. Songs she had sung to Legolas when hope had faded. She remembered one.

“In our times of trouble
We only had ourselves
Nobody else
No one there to save us
We had to save ourselves.

And when the storms came through
They found me and you
Back to back together
And when the sun would shine
It was yours and mine
Yours and mine forever

And oh how the years go by
Oh how the love brings tears to my eyes
All through the changes the song never dies
We fight we laugh we cry
As the years go by

There were times we stumbled
They thought they had us down
We came around yeah
How we rolled and rumbled
We got lost we got found
Now we’re back on solid ground yeah
We took everything
All our times would bring
In this world of danger
Cause when your heart is strong
You know you’re not alone
In this world of strangers

And oh how the years go by
Oh how the love brings tears to my eyes
All through the changes the song never dies
We fight we laugh we cry
As the years go by

And if we lose our way
Any night or day
Well we’ll always be
Where we should be
I’m there for you
And I hope you’re there for me

And oh how the years go by
Oh how the love brings tears to my eyes
All through the changes the song never dies
We fight we laugh we cry
As the years go by.”

Emilie sank to her knees and buried her face in her hands. She raised her hands to the sky and screamed.

“You said you would always be there for me. But you’re not. You are not. This wasn’t supposed to happen.”

Something Varda had said floated back into her mind. ‘Beyond the far reaches of this world remains more than a memory.” What did that mean? Legolas now was no more than a memory. He no longer lived. What could Varda have meant?

“Please tell me, God! Eru Varda please tell me!”
Emilie did not realise that tomorrow she would find out.

“Hey Em,” Josh said coming up behind Emilie as she strung her bow.

“Hi Josh,” she said crookedly smiling.

She stood in the middle of the track field looking at some targets for archery class. She appeared casual dressed in jeans and a dark blue sleeveless top with her long hair slung back into a braid.

“You want to go with us to the movies tonight? We’re seeing your favorite Lord of the Rings.”

“Josh,” she said turning to face him lowering her own, “remember, if you want to go on a date with me, you’re going to have to wait on the list like everyone else,” she grinned.

“Oh come on. You always stay at home. What gives? You’re parents are away. Why don’t we get together? I think it would do you good.”

“Sorry Josh. I’m busy tonight.”

“You’re busy every night.”

“That’s right.”

“Someday, girl I’ll get you.”

She was about to respond when the coach spoke.

“Hey everyone, listen up!”

A familiar feeling suddenly struck her. Something she hadn’t felt since… It was impossible. Emilie turned away from the targets, and her heart nearly leaped out of her chest. There he stood dressed in American clothes, looking like an all American guy his long golden hair pulled into a pony-tail showing his normal tipped ears.

“I told you we would be having a helper this summer. This is Leo all. He’s visiting the school this year. If you have any questions about anything on archery, he will answer them. He is an expert in this area and will be filling in for me while I’m gone.”

Instantly all the girls except Emilie reacted. They surrounded him like a flock of birds after seed. Emilie turned trying to catch her breath and fixed her eye on the target fitting an arrow in her bow. He would not know her of course. This she knew unless the Valar had granted some miraculous measure of grace, but she would love him all the same. Emilie remained calm and stood grinning like a lovestruck fool. She did not even notice Leo come up behind her.

“Is this the famous Emilie Jon’s been talking about so often?”

She turned and smiled.

“Hi,” she said warmly and held out her hand.

He shook it and flashed a perfect grin at her revealing a full set of pure white teeth.

“You any good with that?” he asked nodding toward her bow.

“Watch and see.”

She fitted the arrow in the bow and turned toward the target. She released the arrow making a perfect mark.

“Bull’s eye!” she said proudly.

“Not bad. Could work on your stance,” he said demonstrating. Leo let the arrow go and it pierced her own landing on the bull’s eye as well. She smiled remembering his arrogance loving it even more.

“Well, I guess we’ll be working together more often. Jon speaks very highly of you.”

“He’s very sweet.”

“Well I will expect to see more of you then.”

“Doubt you’ll get rid of me. Thanks for the show.”

“Don’t mention it,” he said turning. But with one last breath in his body, Leo announced the word, “Elenya.”
