The Popular Crowd – Chapter 3

by Jul 12, 2004Stories

Recap: The hobbits and the teens have made it to Tom Bombadils house, and late that night Danny overheard Ruby and Frodo talking.

Danny had trouble getting back to sleep that night. It has, after all been proven that teenagers take longer to fall asleep at night and have more trouble waking up than adults and children. In fact the teenage mind doesn’t actually start processing information till nine o’clock in the morning. But back to the point, he didn’t get to sleep again for some time. It had been so long since he had heard any one use the words “I love you”. He didn’t think love was something real anymore. His parents had been divorced for about five years now. They told him that they just didn’t love each other any more. He figured if love was real it would last for ever. So he had decided that his parents never had loved each other. It was simply a flame they took to far.

But was it just a flame with Ruby and Frodo? He wrote a poem for her in ten seconds, eleven tops. Sure, it wasn’t a masterpiece , but it was sweet. Danny never had, and he didn’t believe he ever would, feel so strongly about someone. He really didn’t think it was possible. He figured that eventually Ruby and Frodo would get sick of playing “Romeo and Juliet” and move on to other people, like everyone else did. Whatever was going on with them was only temporary……Wasn’t it?

The next morning, when he had a chance Danny talked to Laura and Zack about it.

Danny: Do you guys think there is anything going on between Ruby and Frodo?

Laura: Duh! Of course there is.

Zack: I could tell the second I saw them together.

Danny: Well, but I’m thinking it may be more than we thought. I heard them talking last night and she said she loved him.

Laura: I doubt she meant it. Love is a big word. She meant that she thinks he’s hot. Heck! I think he’s hot too.

Zack: Hey!

Laura: Oh, not as hot as you, Babe. (Cough, cough)

Ruby: I think Frodo is much hotter than Zack.

Danny: How long have you been listening?

Ruby: Not long.

Zack: How did you sneak up on us like that?

Ruby: Very sneaky sneaky. I’ll just let you kids continue with you little meeting thingy.

Ruby gracefully walked away, laughing at the three confused teenagers. They were secretly, in their little heads were plotting revenge. As soon as they were out of Bombadils house and Ruby’s body guards weren’t around, they would make her pay for humiliating them thus. Oh yes, she would suffer!
Little did the teens know that Ruby would indeed suffer, but it would not be by their hands.

They stayed the rest of the day at Tom’s house. The hobbits were very thankful for this, but the teenagers were beginning to get a little annoyed by the guy. They slept much more peacefully that night than the night before. And the next day they were refreshed and ready to continue their journey. They said their farewells to Tom and Goldberry and were off.

The teens continued to walked somewhat behind the Hobbits simply because they still made them feel uncomfortable and out of place. Ruby and the Hobbits talked and laughed together at old stories and memories, practically forgetting the presence of the teens.

Ruby: So, then TJ gets to do his own lip-sync despite the fact that he wasn’t an official camper and he got honorable mention.

Merry: But who won the contest?

Ruby: The group that had the sister in law of the camp leader. Oh man. Their song was funny though. They did the beach boys song “Kokomo”. And they were all dressed up like they were going skiing. But TJ would have won had he been a official camper.

Frodo: Your not biased, are you?

Ruby: Oh maybe a little. I love to brag on my little bro. He’s such a clever little guy.

Sam: But he’s not that little anymore, is he?

Pippin: Isn’t he nearly 13?

Ruby: Yeah, but I’ll always see him as that little baby boy I used to play video games with.

Zack: Who are you guys talking about?

Ruby: My little brother. You’ve met him. He gave Danny a black eye once.

Danny: Like sister, like brother.

Ruby: Exactly. He likes just about every kind of music their is. He loves SCI FI and fantasy movies, and agrees with me that technology is ruining America. One day technology will became so advanced that it will take over the world. Thank God we don’t have to worry about that here. Not yet at any rate.

Laura: Weird family.

Ruby: Actually me and TJ are the only ones in the family who feel that way. I was adopted, remember? The rest of the family is relatively normal as far as American families go.

Zack: Except that your older brother is a rock star.

Ruby: A soon to be rock star. Just as soon as his band gets the record deal signed. Which shouldn’t be too long.

Danny: Hey could we stop now? I’m getting tired.

Ruby: We just stopped five minutes ago.

Laura: Well, we’re tired again. So we’re stopping.

Ruby: No, we’re not. We’re in a hurry.

Zack: But we want to stop.

Ruby: Well, it’s not about what you want, is it? You three aren’t gods here, like you are in high school. We five are going on with or without you idiots.

Zack: Fine! We didn’t want to follow you any way.

Ruby: Fine! We didn’t want you to come with us. Go ahead and die out here in wilderness. See if we care.

Zack: Fine!

Ruby: Fine!

Zack: Fine!

Ruby: Fine!

The five Hobbits turned and walked away. They were glad to be rid of those spoiled teen brats. Just two days with them was more than they could bear. So the teens just sat there unsure of what to do, but any thing, they thought, was better than putting up with Ruby and her boy friends, or so they thought.

Laura: We’ve been sitting here for about half an hour now. Are we going to get going?

Zack: Go where, blondy? We don’t even really know where the heck we are.

Danny: This is gunna sound stupid but maybe we should have stayed with Ruby. I cant stand her either but she said we would be safer with her. Which is probably why she left us. She’s got the upper hand in this little chess game.

Laura: But I don’t like chess. I got a chess set for Christmas once and I was all like “What’s chess?”

Danny: What I mean is, Ruby knows everything about Middle Earth. Both from books and from experience. Whereas we know nothing about anything as far as Middle Earth goes. She’s taking advantage of that. The little dork!

Zack: You mean she’s all like trying to get us back or somethin?

Danny: That’s exactly what I mean. First she leads us out here in the middle of nowhere, and then she leaves us.

Laura: It was Zacks fault. He said he didn’t want to follow them any more.

Zack: Well, She wouldnt stop when I told her too.

Danny: It doesn’t matter who’s fault it was. The point is she doesn’t want us to follow her. But we need to follow her to survive and if we follow we can have some fun.

Laura: I don’t get it.

Danny: Duh! I mean that we can make her miserable if we follow, you see.

Zack: Dude, she could make us miserable.

Danny: What’s she gunna do? Nothing. She’s a wimp. She cant hurt us. Now come on. We’re gunna try to catch up with them and when we do, we’ll make her pay.
Ruby awoke with almost no memory of why she had been asleep in the first place. She opened her heavy eyes and saw that she was in some dark cave or something. There was no light, no sounds. Then, to her surprise she saw a strange green hand reaching for her. So, she did what any girl would do in that moment. She screamed bloody murder. Then Frodo sprang forward out of no where and broke the hand before it could touch any of them. At that moment the sword that was laying over them splintered up at the hilt. There was a shriek and the light vanished. In the dark there was a snarling noise. Ruby whimpered and clung to Frodo. He held her tight to him and in his small desperate voice he sang:

Ho! Tom Bambadil, Tom Bombadillo!
By water, wood and hill, by the reed and willow,
By fire, sun and moon, harken now and hear us!
Come, Tom Bombadill, for our need is near us!

It was only silence for a moment. All they could hear was their hearts beating and Ruby whimpering in her throat. She clung even tighter to Frodo. And then they heard somewhat far off the sound of singing. And The writer is too lazy to type up the lyrics to every song. If you don’t know how the sang goes, READ THE BOOK!

They heard the sound of stones rumbling and falling and light streamed in. A opening appeared and there was Tom. He stepped into the chamber and sang again and their was another shriek and part of the chamber caved in. The Barrow wights were gone.

The teens had been wondering about for sometime now, hopping, beyond hope, to find Ruby and the Hobbits. ( That would be a great band name.) They had never been so weary, never so in woe, their strength had nearly given out when they heard strange singing. They followed the sound of and after it stopped they continued to trudge on, in what they hopped was the right direction. Thankfully it was the right direction and it wasn’t to long before they found them sitting the sunshine, talking and to the suprise of the teens, wearing white dresses. (They didn’t take them off for Ruby’s sake.)

When Ruby saw them approaching she stood, smiled, and walked over to them. The boys couldn’t help but notice the way the dress swayed as she walked and her dark curls blew in the wind. She usually wore her hair in a braid but now her curls were hanging loosely over her shoulders and glistening a somewhat golden color in the sun light.

Ruby: I wondered when you guys would show up.

The boys were still starring at her with their tongues hanging out.

Ruby: Take a picture. It will last longer. Anyway, We’re only wearing these things because our clothes were taken from us and I’d rather not go into details. We’re just waiting for Tom to come back with our ponies and then we’ll be off. Any questions? Don’t ask! I’m tired of talking to you and I want to sit down. And if you lads don’t want Frodo to kill you, stop starring at me like that.

Ruby walked away again before they could say anything.

Merry: So, they came back, did they?

Ruby: They did. I know, I don’t like them very much either. But if we just leave them they could get killed.

Sam: But they have been so horrible to you, Miss Ruby. The villains!

Ruby: They have been perfectly horrid, but they don’t deserve to die.

Frodo: Why were they starring at you like that?

Ruby: It’s this dress. They think I look hot in it.

Frodo:That was very inappropriate of those imps.

Ruby: I couldn’t agree more, Honey.

Pippin: How long do we have to put with them?

Ruby: Perchance till we reach Rivendell.

Frodo: They don’t know why we are going to Rivendell, do they?

Ruby: I haven’t told them anything about the you-know-what if that’s what you mean. I don’t know if we can trust them. They might try to steal it if they learn of its power. I wouldn’t put it past them. Their hearts are very weak. But lets not speak of that. I also think we shouldn’t tell them about Me and Frodo

Frodo: Ru, I think they already know, or have at least guessed.

Ruby: Yes, but they don’t know everything. And I think it should stay that way. They will not understand.

Zack: What do you think they are talking about?

Danny: Who knows.

Laura: Who cares.

Danny: You don’t think their, like, plotting something their gunna do to us, do you?

Laura: Nah! Their not that smart.
Ruby: Its simple child psychology. If we do tell them it will be a long time before they are able to digest so much new information that their immature human minds are unused too. They’ll go into a state of denial, because they’ll find out that every thing they ever believed, as far as myself and magic go, was a lie. That would be tough for any human teenager, even without their inferior intellect.

Pippin: I didn’t understand a word of that. I did understand the inferior intellect part, but the rest of it…….

Zack: Their hiding something. I know it.

Danny: Their probably hiding a lot of things. Why should we care?

Laura: You think that Merry guy likes me?

Merry: They nearly drove me mad just being with them for three days. Especially that blond. What was her name? If I weren’t such a gentleman I would have hit her.

Ruby: I’ve hit her before. Its fun. Especially when she cries. He he!
Not to long later Tom returned with their ponies and once they were all dressed they continued on. They came to the mound and picked out swords for themselves. Ruby already had a sword fortunately. The teens were a little nervous with the swords. They had never even held model swords.
They said farewell to Tom and it was onward to Bree. As they did, the hobbits asked Ruby to sing again and as all the Shire knew, Ruby was always ready to sing.

Something is about to give
I can feel it coming
I think I know what it means
I’m not afraid to die
I’m not afraid to live
And when I’m flat on my back
I hope to feel like I did

‘Cause hardness, it sets in
You need some protection
The thinner the skin
I want you to know
That you don’t need me anymore
I want you to know
You don’t need anyone, or anything at all

Who’s to say where the wind will take you
Who’s to know what it is will break you
I don’t know which way the wind will blow
Who’s to know when the time has come around
Don’t want to see you cry

I know that this is not good-bye
In summer I can taste the salt in the sea
There’s a kite blowing out of control on a breeze
I wonder what’s going to happen to you
You wonder what has happened to me

I’m a man, I’m not a child
A man who sees
The shadow behind your eyes

Who’s to say where the wind will take you
Who’s to know what it is will break you
I don’t know where the wind will blow
Who’s to know when the time has come around
I don’t wanna see you cry
I know that this is not good-bye

Did I waste it?
Not so much I couldn’t taste it
Life should be fragrant
Roof top to the basement….

Ruby: Dang good song.

Laura: I’ve heard it before but I don’t know what its about.

Ruby: Its about a person who wants to be free and just fly away. They want to really live their life. I can relate to that. I’ve always wanted to just go places. No where in particular, just one day up and go.

Zack: What if you got lost?

Ruby: How can you get lost if you don’t know where your going? How can you get lost if your following your heart?

Danny: Are you ever going to do it?

Ruby: I have. How do you think I found the Shire? I had no idea I was even looking for the Shire, but I just went where the wind took me and I found my way back home. The home I didn’t know I had. It was a very exciting day. It also just happened to be the day of my first trip to the principals office of the year, and it was barley October.

Danny: What did you do?

Ruby: I gave you a bloody nose.

Danny: I should have guessed.

Laura: How old were you?

Ruby: I told you already. I was eight. I was so desperate to get away and find my real family, I just felt some kind of power waking from inside of me and I knew I could do it somehow.

Zack: How did you leave the Shire in the first place? I’m just guessing it happened when you were a baby, and that’s why you didn’t remember it.

Ruby: Yes, I was barely a year old. At least that’s what my family told me when I found them. As to how it happened, that is a extremely long story which I shall tell you later. Maybe when we reach Bree. I don’t know why I’m telling you about my personal life anyway. You’ll just use it as an excuse to make fun of me anyway.

Danny: Yeah, probably.
By nightfall they had reached the village and found it was muddier and weirder than they had imagined. The hobbits didn’t mind it all that much but those blasted teenagers would not shut up about how unsanitary the town looked and how much they thought that it would be better to keep going till they found a better place. They were used to their being hotels around every corner. Ruby tried to explain to them that it was the only resting place they would find for days, but they couldn’t comprehend such an idea.

Ruby: Look, I see the inn. Lets go.

Once they stepped in Laura took one look around and saw all the weird looking people and decided something.

Laura: Ya know, I think I’ll wait outside.

Danny: Come on Laura. I doubt its any safer out there. As stupid as it sounds I think we should stay together as a group.

Laura: But these guys look like nut cases. What if….

Ruby: Shut up, Mary Kate. We’ll be fine. But whatever you do, don’t tell any one Frodo’s last name.

Zack: That will be easy. I don’t remember his last name anyway.

Ruby: Are you really this stupid or do you do just to annoy me?

Zack: Uh…….

Ruby: I thought so.

To be contiued….
