The Changes of Middle-Earth – The Prologue

by Mar 15, 2003Stories

Finally I was home from school. It had been one of the longest weeks of my life. My name is Kelsey, by the way. I’m 5 foot 8.5 inches and have light brown hair. I’m medium range in weight, not fat, not skinny. My eyes change color, but are mostly green, and sometimes blue. Anyway, I had an Algebra test Tueday and Wednesday; had only done about 100 worksheets in Health, and had finished a 2ft by 2ft map of South America in 2 days. It was horrible. And to top it all off, I found out that I will be taking the End-of-Course Algebra test and the Sat-9/ benchmark test….the two weeks after we get back from Spring Break. That’s too much for a 13 year old girl to deal with.

So, when I got home from school on Friday, which I was stuck at until 5 because I had Jazz Band (I play the trombone), I was so tired I thought I would fall asleep standing up. After yelling a few well-meaning insults at my evil brothers Evan and Trey, who look exactly alike, I went straight to my room and threw myself face down on the bed. I thought about listening to my LOTR soundtrack because it helps me to sleep, when I looked at my wall. It had 2 Harry Potter posters on it, a calendar (also HP), and my Legolas poster. Very nice.

Suddenly I didn’t feel like sleeping. Have you ever had the urge that you just need to write, no matter what it is, you just need to write something down? Well, if you don’t, I’ll tell you I do. I had been to this site about 5 times and was a member, so I figured, why not post something? Well, here it is.

I wrote that night until about 6, and was soon tired again. I chucked my notebook and pen onto the floor, pulled my purple flowerdy comforter up over my shoulders and put my Harry Potter pillow ( I had about 4 on the bed, all with different cases on them, none matching the sheets) over my head because I was too lazy to get up and turn off the light. Hey, it was Friday, I was taking the day off.

Of course I couldn’t go to sleep; my mind was racing 100 miles an hour. School… Lotr… Harry Potter movie… Julius Caesar (English assignment, we had to read the play)… Mrs. Hurley the substitute 2nd period… GO TO SLEEP! No, not you, thats what I thought to myself. At about 6:45, my mom came in and asked me if I wanted to go out to eat. I graciously declined, claiming that I was too tired. Soon I heard the garage door close and they were gone.

I finally got up and tuned off the light. I used to have to sleep with a nightlight on, but now I can’t even go to sleep with the hall light on. I retreated back to me bed and grabbed my Sony Walkman off the floor ( I have no shelves in my room at all) and played “The Breaking of the Fellowship” and drifted off to sleep about the second clarinet/oboe/whatever-it-is solo. How long ago that seems…

Do any of you have contacts? I do, and I was wearing them when I fell asleep. Do your contacts bother you if you sleep in them and wake up? Mine do. They usually make my eyes dry so I have to pull a hair or two out of my arm to water my eyes. But this time they didn’t hurt. My eyes weren’t dry. I wasn’t even wearing them. But I could see better than I ever had in my life. Whoa.

I don’t think I would have even needed them to take in my surroundings. Green. Lush, green grass surrounded me 360 degrees. The sky was a brilliant shade of blue and darkened slightly as it met the grassy plain at the horizon. I could tell a major difference in the air, too. I live in a relatively small town, so we don’t have smog like in L.A., but the air was cleaner…crisper, if you will. Not a cloud was in sight, yet the electricity in the air was enough to light a zillion wat lightbulb. About three miles away, I could see a gathering of trees. Perhaps a forest. Where was I? Then it hit me like a ton of bricks.

Note: This is like a journal entry, but the rest is going to be in third person. Sorry it was so long and boring. When she appears in Middle-earth, she ages by about ten years. I don’t know why, she just does. Something to do with the whole space/time continuom. And if you have any suggestions on a title, please post them in the comments!
