It’s Not the Size That Counts… – …but the courage

by Apr 14, 2003Stories

It isn’t always the strongest king; but sometimes the very small,
The meek of the world that offer to take the burdens of us all.
And it isn’t the strongest that saves the day, but often the little soul,
That uses his trusting courage instead of an army bold.

The waves will crash; the shorelines writhe, and no one can put an end,
to the sun in the sky or the mountain high or the road with a curving bend.
Though the mighty try to do this, their armies renowned will fall,
It’s often the weakest that conquer the wraith-like dreams that haunt us all.

There gathered kings and warriors to council on their fate,
While they conversed, a little hobbit witnessed the debate.
A Halfling of the Shire he was; he volunteered to take,
The Ring of Power and destroy it, for the world’s sake.

The journey was hard, the road was long, he fought with every breath,
To hold away the silent phantom with the name of Death.
Not silent though were all the foes he faced along the way,
Despair and doubt and endless toil always seemed to say:

“It’s never the weak that conquer, why do you stand alone,
Under the towering, dreaded peaks of Mordor’s mountain stone
With a dying land before your eyes. How can you hope to win,
Over a power that to face Men cannot scarce begin?”

These words are proved untrue at the close of this timeless lay;
For that small hobbit saved the lives of an earth long turned astray.
His thoughts strayed never from the road: he only thought of this:
The task that lay upon his back; the mission that was his.

The sun will rise and set without command on every day,
And though the mighty ever try they cannot hope to sway,
The moon and stars sweet rising at the set and start of night,
And again the sun will rise with the break of morning light.

And it isn’t always the strongest king; but sometimes the very small,
The meek of the world that offer to take the burdens of us all.
And it isn’t the strongest that saves the day, but often the little soul,
That uses his trusting courage instead of an army bold.
