Forever Autumn

The night broke around her covering her with stars. Merlyn opened her eyes; the world spun around her and made her feel dizzy. A churning in her stomach told her she was going to be sick and what was left of her dinner came without a warning and settled in the grass next to her. A bitter acidic taste stung the back of her throat and churned her stomach once more. Unable to keep her eyes open she found herself blacking out again.
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Many hours passed which seem like days. The sun shone through the thick trees and laid its rays on Merlyn who was laid by the great oak, pale and looked, to the untrained eye, dead. The birds were curious and took a glance at Merlyn with sympathetic eyes, the forest did all it could to protect her and the land dwelling creatures stood night and day watching and waiting.
Many more hours passed and Merlyn was only able to wake to be sick and blackout again.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Merlyn woke with a buzzing in her ear. Her eyes flickered and her head spun. She tried to rise but the pain in her side told her it wasn’t possible. She shook her head gently and the buzzing stopped, there was a scatter in the leaves and complete silence.
She had to make sure that there wasn’t any thing broken, and on this thought she started flexing her arms and legs and the rest of her body. There was a sharp pain in her left side; Merlyn didn’t need to look at it to know how serious it was. She placed a hand over the wound and sighed. A thought of her father crossed her mind.
“How can I think of myself when dad could be also hurt…….” Merlyn stopped herself and chocked back a sob. “…….or worse dead!”

Merlyn tried once again to rise to her feet but the sharp pain in her side told her it was time to blackout once more, Merlyn was getting tired of not being able to keep her eyes open but allowed herself to be overcome by sleep.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Merlyn awoke with a scream in her ears. The voice was familiar. It was her own!
“Dad…….dad……DAD!!!!!!!!!!” Merlyn shook with rage and fear, her own voice scared her, it didn’t even sound like it was her own.
Merlyn heard quick moving footsteps beside her and a gentle hand resting on her forehead, Merlyn, some how, collected her energy and tried to move away. Merlyn found herself covered in what she took for a blanket. Its patterns were not recognizable and swirled in Merlyn’s mind.
The hand held her shoulder and a voice speaking in a language not known to her driftered around her and settled her pain and the grief in her heart. The same hand poured warm liquor in to her mouth and throat, which settled and refreshed spirit. Merlyn looked up into the sky and watched a shooting star fly across the full moons path. She fell asleep and dreamt of the dance of the moon and the shooting star.

The owner of the hand looked in to her sleeping face. He came up with the conclusion that there was something strange about this child.
“Maybe I’m wrong” he thought, “She is no child, but a young lady……….or something more”
His thoughts were interrupted by a fellow friend lowing himself to his height next to Merlyn and whispered, “How does she fare friend?”

“She fares well. Her wounds I can heal, but there are places where even I can’t help” He stopped and sighed, “she must rest, we need to keep watch”

Merlyn dreamt of the moon, the shooting star was chasing it across the galaxy and around the planets. The star was throwing balls of light at the moon and laughing at its pain. Sweat was colleting on her brow and a slight chill shook her body. The moon was screaming for mercy but the star showed no pity. The star took one more shot, it was true and pieced the moon heart and with the moons scream Merlyn found herself bolt up right awake.
Something caught her eye on her left. The wind shook the trees gently and the leaves seem to sing their own song.
“Rest child” the night spook
Merlyn felt slightly afraid but the rage of being called a child bubbled inside.
“I’m no child, if you wish to know I’m a young adult of 17.”
“You are a child in my eyes” the night replied, humor sparked in its voice, “but something tells me that your are to stubborn to listen, so the best I can do is introduce myself. I’m Legolas”
Merlyn stared into the night with wonder.
“Tell me. ………Where I’m I” Merlyn tried to get it clear in her head, ” I mean what is this place. It is different to the forest I know.
This statement is true; Merlyn had realized that the forest surrounding them both was…
“How can I put it” thought Merlyn, ” fuller, wilder?”
The last thought came out clearly
“It has secrets!” Merlyn stammered
“I agree with you, it does” Legolas took a step out the shadows; the power of curiosity had taken a hold and wasn’t letting go. ” You are in Middle Earth, a land of Men, Elves, Dwarves and other creatures I could say but the list is too long”
Merlyn watched him walk towards her and settle by her feet.
” But what about my dad and…….” Merlyn’s voice drifted “Kate, you haven’t seen them, have you?”
Legolas could hear the stress and grief in her voice and this pain him also.
“No child, I haven’t and neither of my fellow companions. You must rest; we have talked long enough.” Legolas settled the blanket around her shoulders “You will meet the others in the morning when you awake.
Merlyn closed and rested her eyes; she believes she’s slept enough. She watched the stars and strangely they comfort her, and when she finally slept she dreamt of the flowing hair of her favorite queen, Boadicea.
