Arwen looked at the letter in her hand, the letter Samwise had given to her that morning before they departed.
<< Mr. Frodo left this for me to give to you, >>
he had said simply.
Arwen turned the letter over, broke the seal on the back, and unfolded it.
<< My Lady Arwen, >>
<< This is my farewell to you and King Aragorn. It is Fall and tomorrow Sam and I leave for the Grey Havens. I will not be coming back. I want to thank you for your gift in granting me your place on the ship. You have a gift of discerning hearts. You understand individuals better than they even understand themselves. You are a courageous lady, with the kind of courage born only of deep love. When you offered me to sail in your stead, I did not at first think that would be necessary. I thought perhaps the only reason I would want to leave would be to remain with Bilbo. But when I returned home I realized that was not the case. I no longer belong in the Shire. I have seen too much. And how do you pick up the threads of an old life when in your heart you begin to realize there is no going back. There are some things that time cannot mend, some hurts that go too deep, that have taken hold.
<< And so I thank you for your second gift. It has indeed brought me comfort on the darkest days. It has lessened the pain a little. I return it to you now. Who knows but what some day I shall see you wear it again when we meet beyond the grey rain curtain of this world. I will be glad on that day.
<< Farewell Queen Evenstar. I would have you bid farewell to King Elessar also. To me, that is one of the most grievous partings. I shall ever be grateful that our roads have met and our lives have intertwined. >>
Slowly, Arwen untied the small package that Sam had given her along with the letter. The Evenstar lay glittering in her hand.
