Epilogue – Mirkwood

by Feb 14, 2003Stories

Deep in Eryn Lasgalen, formerly known as Mirkwood the elves were celebrating the return of their prince Legolas and his dwavish companion Gimli, son of Gloin. Many of the elves danced in the great clearing while others sat at the feast tables to hear about the adventures of Legolas and Gimli.

“They’ve also been doing some orc hunting since the war ended, haven’t you son?” announced Thranduil proudly

“Yes father,” replied Legolas dreamily. Gimli could see that Legolas was not really concentrating on the party for something else had caught his attention.

“What are you looking at?” asked Gimli quietly

“I saw something in those trees before,” replied Legolas, and then turning to his father he asked, “May we be excused? I’d like to see how the forest has changed,”

“Yes, you may go,” said Thranduil hurriedly before continuing his conversation with the other elves. Legolas and Gimli rose from their seats and left the clearing unnoticed by any of the elves.

They wandered through the woods. “Things certainly have changed since Sauron was destroyed and the realms of Middle-earth recaptured,” said Legolas in wonder of how green the forest had become

“For the better, of course” answered Gimli

“Of course,” Then they again saw what Legolas had seen before. It looked as if the trees in the distance were moving

“Ents?” breathed Gimli

“No, maybe Entwives though,” they hurried forward right to where they had seen the trees move. When they got there, they saw tall creatures that looked a lot like Ents but a bit more feminine, these were the Entwives.

“Entwives,” Legolas called as he ran amongst them. They all looked shocked and stepped back from the strangers. After a short moment one of the Entwives stepped forward to speak on behalf of the others.

“Who are you and how do you know who we are?” she asked them slowly

“I am Legolas, prince of the forest you dwell in and this is Gimli Elf-friend. We are here to help you. Are you looking for the Ents?”

“We are always looking for Ents but we can’t find our way back to them,”

“Perhaps I can help you. I know where the Ents dwell and how you can get there,”

“Can you show us?”

“Yes, we will take you there as soon as we say goodbye to our friends”

“Thank you, we are all eternally grateful.”

And so it came to pass that they were leaving Eryn Lasgalen once again.

“I will miss you son,” said Thranduil “and you Gimli, come back and see us as soon as you can,”

“We will father, but for now we have to find Treebeard and the other Ents,”

“But we won’t forget,” put in Gimli

“Come, Come we Entwives don’t usually get impatient but it has been so long since we last saw the Ents,”

“Goodbye,” said the elves

“Goodbye,” responded Gimli

“Well,” said Legolas “It’s time for us to go. On to our next adventure.”
