Daughter of the Golden Wood – Celebrian’s story, part five

by Feb 5, 2003Stories

With Celeborn’s consent taken care of, all that remained was to find a day for the wedding. Elrond and Celebrian used all their powers of persuasion to convince Galadriel and Celeborn to make the wedding “as soon as possible,” but they set the day for a month later.

It seemed a very long month to both Celebrian and Elrond, but they used it to wander the woods of Lothlorien, falling even more in love. Celebrian took Elrond to her favorite place, the hill of Cerin Amroth, covered with golden elanor and white niphredil, and she smiled when he called it beautiful. She was glad he liked her home, even though they would be living in Rivendell, not Lothlorien.

Finally the day came. Galadriel took Celebrian into her own room to prepare, and when they were there, Celebrian’s mother picked up a green jewel that lay on top of her bed. “This is for you, Celebrian,” she said, taking her daughter’s hand and gently placing the gem in it, “to remind you of Lorien when you leave.” Tears glittered in Galadriel’s eyes, and Celebrian blinked back tears of her own and hugged her mother tightly. “I will always remember,” she whispered.

Then Galadriel pulled out of Celebrian’s embrace and helped her into a long white and silver dress. She let Celebrian’s golden hair fall free, and placed a wreath of niphredil on her head. “Come,” Galadriel said finally, and Celebrian followed her out of the room, out of Caras Galadhon, and to Cerin Amroth, where Celebrian and Elrond would marry. Elrond was already there, and Celebrian smiled at him as she came to the top of the hill and placed her hand in his.

“I, Elrond, pledge myself to you, Celebrian,” Elrond began, using the ritual Quenya words for Elven weddings.

“I, Celebrian, pledge myself to you, Elrond,” Celebrian echoed.

“I promise to love, honor, and protect you for all the time we shall spend together, here or elsewhere.”

“I promise to do the same, until we pass into Valinor, there to live forever in peace, and for all time beyond.”

“From sunrise to sunset.”

“From sunset to sunrise.”

Celebrian looked up at Elrond. The ceremony was over. They were married. Love shone out of his eyes as he looked at her, and together, hand in hand, they came down from Cerin Amroth.

I apologize if this wedding is not accurate to any that Tolkien wrote about. I haven’t read The Silmarillion, and there’s nothing in The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings, so I’m sorry if I offend anyone by making up a wedding ceremony.
