Author’s Note Hey you all! Thanks ever so much for your comments! I tried to make this part longer. Enjoy!
“You what?!?!” Maddox asked. He was nearly yelling, “You love Legolas?!?!”
“Well,” Arenial said, getting frustrated, “I thought I did. But then you came. Now I- I don’t know. I can’t talk about this right now. I’m sorry.” Arenial had tears in her eyes now. She didn’t want to around him, she just wanted to think. She ran away a distance, sat with her back against a boulder, and cryed.
Maddox was angry now. Angry at her for loving Legolas, angry at himself for being so stupid and actually trying to kiss her. A million questions were pounding his head. Why did she love Legolas? Why did he love her? For once, he was actually glad he was bringing her to his master’s palace now. But wait, what had she said? She didn’t know if she loved Legolas anymore? Because of him? Maybe there was still hope for him. Maybe he could win her love. Now smiling, he packedup the remaining supplies and walked down the path she had taken, her horse following him.
Arenial sat down, leaning her back against a boulder, tears streaming down her face. Her sadness had now turned into anger. She was angry at herself for crying, crying in front of him, crying like a baby. She hated love. It caused too many problems. Why did she love Legolas? Did she truly love him? Or did she love Haldir? He was kind, very attractive, and her heart was leaning toward him now. She was confused, sad, and angry all at once. Suddenly, she felt a hand on her shoulder. It’s touch was soft and loving.
“Arenial?” she heard his soft voice. She looked up at him with her puffy, red eyes. “ Wow, she’s beautiful. Even when she’s like this.” Maddox thought. “Arenial, are you alright?” Maddox bent down and took both of her small hands in his big ones. He lifted her to her feet and embraced her, all the while muttering soft apologies into her ear. At length, he pulled back and looked down at her and into her eyes. “Arenial, I’m sorry. I am so sorry. I should never have done that. I’m a stupid-“
“Haldir,” she cut him off, “It’s okay. I forgive you.” A smile spread across her face as she wiped her eyes.
Maddox was relieved, “Thankyou. But, we should be on our way now.” Arenial nodded in agreement.
They had continued for another day when Maddox became curious about Arenial’s sunflower broach. He had constantly fingering it on their journey but he never asked her about it.
At last, he couldn’t take it any longer, “Arenial, where did you get your broach?”
“My mother gave it to me, along with my sword and my two daggers. They came as a set. She gave them to me just an hour before she disappeared. With my weapons came a note. I still have it with me, I keep it near always.” Tears came to Arenial’s eyes at the thought of her mother.
Arenial’s mother was so full of life. She was very beautiful and always smiling. Then, one day, she disappeared, without a trace, and was never heard from again.
“May I read the note?” Maddox asked, “You don’t have to let me if you don’t want me to, though.”
Arenial just nodded her head, “No, you can. I don’t mind.”
She slowly drew a crumpled piece of paper from her pocket and handed it to Maddox. He read it silently. It said:
You wield a flame inside of you. That’s what your name means: Wielder of Flame. I am giving you a sword and two daggers. They are made of the finest metal and will help you well in battle, though, I hope you will never have to fight. Still, my darling, learn to fight. I am also giving you a broach. Keep it with you always to remember me by. Im melin le (I love you) Namarie (Farewell)
Maddox looked up, “But, why is it in the shape of a sunflower?”
“Sunflowers were my mother’s favourite flowers. They are mine also. Do you have any idea what
<< You wield of flame inside of you >>
Maddox thought for a moment, “I haven’t the slightest, but I will tell you when I do.”
They were five days from their destinations (Randos’s palace) when Arenial noticed they were going west instead of south, the direction they should’ve been going.
Arenial decided to ask Maddox about it,” Haldir, shouldn’t we be heading south?”
“Why do you ask?” Maddox asked. He was afraid she would find out the truth about him.
“Well, we’re heading west, toward the mountains, and Lothlorien lies south.”
“Oh, I am just taking a different route that’s all.”
“Umm, if you say so.” Arenial was still a bit unsure of his answer, but he knew what he was doing, so she let it go.
Over the next few days, Arenial opened up more to Maddox. His ‘mistake’ ( the kiss) had brought them closer together and they became better friends.
But, one night, while they were talking by the fire, an arrow landed on the ground beside them. Maddox recognized the arrow as one of Randos’s.
“Oh no,” he thought, “They’re coming to get her.”
He looked at Arenial, she had drawn her sword. Suddenly, amny, many Elves came out the woods, swords drawn. They immediately ran to Arenial, who was completely surprised, disarmed her, and tied her hands behind her back.
“AAAAA!” shee screamed as the ropes bit into her skin.
They brought her to their leader. “So, Maddox, I see you’ve done you’re job. Very good, Lord Randos shall reward you greatly.”
“Wait, his name isn’t Maddox. No, you’ve got the wrong person. This is Haldir of Lothlorien.” Arenial said.
“So that’s what you said your name was?” The leader asked Maddox. “Well, mylady, you are wrong. This is Maddox, second in command to Lord Randos, a Dark Elf.”
Arenial nearly exploded, “What? You’re a Dark Elf? Why did you say that you were Haldir? I don’t understand. What is going on?”
Maddox opened his mouth to speak but the leader beat him to it. “You she see as soon as we get to Lord Randos’s palace.”
The leader stepped forward, followed by Arenial, then Maddox, then the rest of the army, the last Elf leading Arenial’s horse.
The next night, only a day away from the palace, when they had stopped to set up camp, Maddox went over to Arenial, who was sitting by herself near the fire. “Arenial?”
“Arenial, we need to talk.” Maddox sat down beside her. There was no response. “Arenial, I’m sorry.”
“Sorry? How can you be sorry? Why didn’t you tell me any of this before?”
“I don’t know.” Maddox said quietly,” I guess I didn’t want you to hate me.”
“Hate you? For telling me the truth? I’d be grateful to you if you told me the truth. I could be safe in Lorien right now. Why would you be scared that I’d hate you?”
“Well, I’m a Dark Elf.”
“So, you’re a Dark Elf. That wouldn’t bother me. But, there’s something I don’t understand, over the time we’ve been together, I’ve felt the evil go away. Why?”
“I love you.”
