Just got in from my first (of many) viewings. As usual, I am completely overwelmed with it all. There were so many wonderful little intimate scenes. I loved every single one of them that included the hobbits – I’m so glad they really got to shine in this.
My “Wow” scenes were many: the outpouring of the Witch King’s army, the dozens of orc-filled boats merging on an unsuspecting Osgiliath, the first shot of Minas Tirith, the lighting of the beacons, the ride of the Rohirrim, the view of the plains of Mordor crawling with the orc armies, Frodo and Sam on their “island” amid Mt. Doom’s eruption, the arrival of the Eagles and perhaps, most of all, Aragorn, Merry and Pippin shouting “For Frodo!” as they charge toward the Black Gate and sure death.
All in all, the movie flew by way too fast. I couldn’t believe it when I heard the horns of Rohan. I thought they would show more of their ride to Gondor and suddenly they were there! So many scenes seemed to be way more hurried than I would like them to be – especially Aragorn’s coronation. I just kept wanting to hear lines from the book.
Actually I “heard” lines from the book in my head throughout the movie. When Rohan came to the rescue, all I could think of was “Rohan had come at last!!” I was REALLY disappointed that my favorite lines didn’t make it in the Grey Havens scene. I can’t help wishing that “It must often be so, Sam, when things are in danger, some one has to give them up, lose them, so that others may keep them” will be in the DVD EE.
It will take me weeks and several more viewings to get my final opinion on it. Right now I’m thinking – I can’t wait to see the EE and, more than that, I can’t wait to read that wonderful book all over again!
