At first, I was not looking forward to RotK. Yeah, I wanted to see it, but given the expectations, how could it possibly live up to the hype? I admit that I was not totally enthrolled by The Two Towers upon first veiwing, but have come to love it after seeing it a dozen or so times. I did not want to be dissapointed. Well, Peter Jackson and company did not let me down. This film is the best of the series and as a stand alone film is one of the best of all time.
We all know the plot already, so I will not go into details of that.
There has been a lot of talk about Sean Astin receiving an Oscar nod for this film and he is very deserving. His performance is both uplifting and heartbreaking. I would say this though. There is little chance that Viggo Mortensen will be recognized for this film, but he delivers, what to me was not only the finest performance of the film, but the best of the trilogy. Just watch his eyes as he delivers the line “For Frodo” at the Black Gates. It is amazing. It’s a really a shame that all of that cast can not be recognized. Most notably, Bernard Hill, Ian McKellen and yes, even Elijah Wood, who finally surprised me by hitting his stride at the right moment. Kudos…
There is not much more I want to say… Yes the visual effect are good, particularly at Pellennor Fields and so are the battle sequences, but in the end the characters are what this about and that is where the movie excels. It was breathtaking from the opening frame to the last and should win Best Picture without a doubt
