Vain Call – Who remains after battle?

by Jan 31, 2003Poetry

Shouts and cheers arise for the heroes
Who walked under shadow in the night
Greeting loved ones and greeted by those
Who escaped from shadow into light.

Yet among the ones who are joyful
A few sorrowful ones still remain
Receiving in answer no greeting
Yet still calling for lost ones in vain.

“What hath delayed him in battle?”
“Why will he still not answer my call?”
“Under what foe’s hand and sword he fell?”
“No, that can’t be true; he did not fall.”

Then faith fades, and the mourning cries
Drown out hope in a vast sea of tears.
The time passes and he does not come…
“He hath fallen. He wilt not arise.”
