The Pyre of Denethor – The Steward of Gondor’s Grave

The Pyre of Denethor

A man drowning clings to a rock,
Not knowing what will happen
He cannot decide what to do.

Should he jump into the water and hope to swim on the shore
Or should he continue holding on, waiting out the maelstrom?
He can not decide.

Either way could mean death;
Perhaps both ways are doomed.
He cannot decide:

So Denethor stood on his pyre;
His son calling up to him
Sauron shouting down to him
Gandalf calling to his right
The daunting armies on his left.

He decides.
