The Deep Blue Sea – Eldarin/Númenorean folk song

by Jan 13, 2004Poetry

I’ve been attempting to create a folk music identity for the Eldar and for the Edain. This is written in the form of a Celtic ballad (I suppose it takes its greatest inspiration from “What Does the Deep Sea Say”–ever heard Tim O’Brien and Karan Casey sing that?). I think this is a song that began with the Eldar, but found its way to Númenor, and this would be the version sung there. (Many Númenoreans were, after all, mariners, so this would be a fitting lament.)

‘Twas on a stormy summer’s day
My true love did take my leave
To journey long and far away
Across the deep blue Sea
My tears did not dissuade him
And he left me reluctantly
On the shores I said farewell to him
When he sailed across the deep blue Sea

Oh, can you hear me, deep blue Sea?
As my love lies fore’er in thy deeps
Could any desperate plea persuade thee?
Could you not return him to me?

‘Twas many a night and many a day
I watched the horizon anxiously
And for his safe return I did pray
From across the deep blue Sea
A lonely ship came straggling home
And the word was brought to me
My beloved perished in a raging storm
Across the deep blue Sea

Oh, can you hear me, deep blue Sea?
As my love lies fore’er in thy deeps
Could any desperate plea persuade thee?
Could you not return him to me?

Here on these rocky cliffs I stand
Would that I could join him in the deeps
Bidding farewell to home and land
To find him ‘neath the deep blue Sea
All I would forsake, if I may
To find the one that I most seek
On these shores no more shall I remain
I shall find him ‘neath the deep blue Sea

Oh, can you hear me, deep blue Sea?
As my love lies fore’er in thy deeps
Could any desperate plea persuade thee?
Could you not return him to me?
Could you not return him to me?
