The Call of the Sea – The Gulls

by Feb 18, 2004Poetry

Twas a cold night in December when my true love came to me,
I knew by the grey-green light in his eyes, he’d harkened to the Sea.
The gulls! The gulls!
A song so fell was never heard before
By immortal Elf or mortal Man upon the Hither Shore.

In darkness, under light of moon, the swan-ship bore away
My heart, in mourning shadow is blinded by the spray.
The gulls! The gulls!
A song so fell was never heard before
By immortal Elf or mortal Man upon the Hither Shore.

Oh, Ocean can thou wash away this piercing pain inside?
Or conceal me in thine endless depths and in grief shall I hide?
The gulls! The gulls!
A song so fell was never heard before
By immortal Elf or mortal Man upon the Hither Shore.

So harsh and cruel the siren’s call broke upon the stones,
Stolen was my love from me, blood mingles with the foam.
The gulls! The gulls!
A song so fell was never heard before
By immortal Elf or mortal Man upon the Hither Shore.

As lie beside the water’s edge and hear the sea-bird’s cry,
My tears are lost within it, and I shall forever wonder why.
The gulls! The gulls!
A song so fell was never heard before
By immortal Elf or mortal Man upon the Hither Shore.

There is no ship to bear me hence from a world so filled with woe,
And ever shall my soul reside far from where they will go.
The gulls! The gulls!
A song so fell was never heard before,
By immortal Elf or mortal Man upon the Hither Shore.
