That They May Rise – A Song

by Dec 13, 2003Poetry

Note: This started off as a song about Helm’s Deep, but as it progressed, I came to realise it that wasn’t what it was really about. No–more about the general despair and hope of the War of the Ring, and even Frodo’s journey. (“Someone has to give [things] up, lose them, so that others may keep them,” as Frodo says in RotK.) Those who went to the last great stand at the Black Gate did not think to ever return. They gave everything up, that others would rise to find the Sun that they would never again see.

Falling rain
Shrouding gloom
Dying flame
Approaching doom
Sprits are lessened and flickering hope fades
The cold night is coming; there seems no escape
This wall holds us, as a prison, bound to this end
What likeliness we shall see the Sun rise again?

Fight on
Despite the falling rain
Keep on
All cannot be in vain
Perhaps it is hopeless
And the battle shall claim us
Perhaps this be the end
And death shall now take us
Though for us this battle shall not be won
We fight that others may rise to see the Sun

Dimming skies
Hanging dark
The Shadow lies
On every heart
Enveloping, grasping, all light it devours
Shading and covering, rising in power
We flounder, we founder, but cannot defeat it
But may we abandon despair and yet rise to meet it!

Fight on
Despite the falling rain
Keep on
All cannot be in vain
Perhaps it is hopeless
And the battle shall claim us
Perhaps this be the end
And death shall now take us
Though for us this battle shall not be won
We fight that others may rise to see the Sun

May they rise
May the Darkness flee
May it fly
May the stars sing with glee
We shall not see it but for this thought we go on–
We fight for freedom, that they may rise to see the Sun

Perhaps it is hopeless
And the battle shall claim us
Perhaps this be the end
And death shall now take us
Though for us this battle shall not be won
We fight that others may rise to see the Sun
