Leaving the Shire – Frodo’s thoughts

by Apr 21, 2003Poetry

I know that today there will be a good-bye
I can’t stay in the Shire, though I tried
As I ride to the Havens, a tear in my eye
With my faithful Sam at my side.

I must say goodbye to many loved faces
I can’t stay in the Shire, though I tried
I must bid farewell to all the familiar places
With my faithful Sam at my side.

I saved the Shire, and the hobbits brave
I can’t stay in the Shire, though I tried
I must leave or they will dig my grave
With my faithful Sam at my side.

I need Elven healing and long rest to live
I can’t stay in the Shire, though I tried
I gave away all that I had in me to give,
With my faithful Sam at my side.

Now at this very last comes the hardest test
I can’t stay in the Shire, though I tried
I must leave my friends, and they are blessed
But my faithful Sam must leave my side.
