Give Us Estel – A Song

by Dec 4, 2003Poetry

Note:

In Morgoth’s Ring, the tenth book of the Histories of Middle-earth, Tolkien mentions the two Sindarin words for hope. Amdir, “looking up” is glossed “an expectation of good, which, though uncertain has some foundation in what is known”. The second is estel, which is a deep trust, a hope founded on Eru, that hopes when there is nothing known to found it on, a naked hope that exists merely because if there was no hope there would be nothing left save despair. I was reflecting on these two words recently and ended up writing this song.

It’s what we all cling to–
A promise based on the known
And when everything’s gone
And the seeds of despair sown
It’s all there is to hold us up
But what if it fades away?
What if the promise can’t be kept?
What if we can’t find the day?

Too long have we kept amdir
And we’re ready to give in
There’s nothing known to sustain us
And we’re sure despair will win
But there’s a greater hope than this
A trust that goes deeper than the known
And when we’re left with nothing else
It’s all that can sustain us
Founded on One that never dies
We crave to trust this deep in You
And though it’s dark You will never fail
So give us estel

It’s fine in sunny weather
When we can say that all is well
And hoping all together
Everything will turn out fine
Because we have that assurance
For a little while at least
Until the clouds hide the Sun
And the darkness gets so deep

Too long have we kept amdir
And we’re ready to give in
There’s nothing known to sustain us
And we’re sure despair will win
But there’s a greater hope than this
A trust that goes deeper than the known
And when we’re left with nothing else
It’s all that can sustain us
Founded on One that never dies
We crave to trust this deep in You
And though it’s dark You will never fail
So give us estel

It lasts through a few showers
Standing strong against the wind
But when things get harsher
We grasp it but it vanishes
So then we’re left
With nothing more to hope on
Lost and bereft
Unable to go on

Too long have we kept amdir
And we’re ready to give in
There’s nothing known to sustain us
And we’re sure despair will win
But there’s a greater hope than this
A trust that goes deeper than the known
And when we’re left with nothing else
It’s all that can sustain us
Founded on One that never dies
We crave to trust this deep in You
And though it’s dark You will never fail
So give us estel
