Frodo’s Once Upon A Dream – Frodo’s Tale

by Aug 30, 2002Poetry

I remember myself in the days of old
As a hobbit lad before days became cold
This Burden this Ring is heavy on me
I wish this didn’t happen so I would be free

I left the Shire with the hobbits and went to Bree
There I met Strider and he has helped me
We went to Rivendell and there I said I’d take the Ring
I had no idea how hard it would be and what it would bring

We went to Moria, Lorien where dwells Galadirel
We told her of Gandalf a tale I am loath to tell
For he fell with the demon into the deep hole
I won’t see him again and that was a day of woe

The company left from Lorien on the River
Passed the Aronath which gleamed like Silver
Boromir’s madness overtook him he went after me
I slipped it on and fled and now here I am you see

At the edge of the River a boat in front of me
The Ring in my hands tears from my face streaming
What must I do? How can I move on? I know I have to
I know I must go alone. I must somehow get through

I will miss them all but must be brave and not cry
For I know I might not see them again. I might die
I then remember my words in the Moria dark endless
When Gandalf was with me there I did confess

” I wish the Ring had never come to me.
I wish none of this had happened.”
” So do all who live to see such times but that is not for them to decided. All you must decide is what to do with the time that is given to you.

Once I was sheltered was it a dream?
I was once a happy hobbit so it would seem
Now I must make a decision and it will be tough
I destroy this Ring and the journey will be rough

Once upon a dream I played in the Shire wood
The Rivers, the hobbit holes, and if I could
I would return to my home but alas this I must do
It must be thrown into the Mountain fires and so

I push the boat though I hear Sam calling me
Out onto the River I go then I turn around and see
Sam wading out into the river towards me
I tell him to go back but he does not agree

He can’t swim he won’t abandon me for he has made
A promise to never leave me I slowly see him fade
Under the waters I must help him I paddle quickly
I reach his spot and grab his hand he grabs me

I help him into the boat and he says to me
” I made a promise don’t you leave him Samwise Gamgee.”
We embrace each other. I’m glad he is coming too
For this is something alone I know I could not do

So where are we now? Mordor ahead of us lies
I’m glad Sam’s with me and I slowly sigh
” I hope the others find a safer road.”
Now with Sam I press on with this burden this load

I remember Bilbo’s words ” It’s a dangerous business Frodo, going out your door. If you step out onto the road and if you don’t keep your feet there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.”
The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began
The Road goes ever on and on
And I must follow if I can
