Frodo, It Will Soon Be Yours – Companion piece to “Bilbo, You Gave It To Me”

by Apr 13, 2004Poetry

There is no wind blowing,
there’s just the sound of our feet.
Dwarvish racket! Crackling,
breaking sticks with a beat.
Oh, it feels so long ago –
and yet so very soon,
when dwarves and I were off to go
on an adventure ‘neath that moon.
I feel
funny-like,
I’m tingling inside.
I feel
sad-like,
I’m stretched and tired inside.
I’m going away on a journey,
I’ll probably never return.
The dwarves are following behind me,
I’ll see them if I turn.
Gandalf, I left it with you,
you said that’s what I had to do.
Frodo, it will soon be yours.

Such a feeling came over me,
I’ve never felt like that before!
A rage, a burning lust to keep,
to take it and run out through the door.
I scratch my head in a sheepish way,
I pull off my hot faded hood.
What made me act like that today?
I stop – was it the ring? It could!
I feel
funny-like,
I’m tingling inside.
I feel
sad-like,
I’m stretched and tired inside.
I’m going away on a journey,
I’ll probably never return.
The dwarves are following behind me,
I’ll see them if I turn.
Gandalf, I left it with you,
you said that’s what I had to do.
Frodo, it will soon be yours.

I put my hood back down
and pull it down, fore and aft.
I step my feet on the hard ground.
It must have been the ring at last.
It looked at me sometimes,
like an eye, watching me.
I shudder, thinking of those times;
it’s been so long since I felt peace.
I feel
funny-like,
I’m tingling inside.
I feel
sad-like,
I’m stretched and tired inside.
I’m going away on a journey,
I’ll probably never return.
The dwarves are following behind me,
I’ll see them if I turn.
Gandalf, I left it with you,
you said that’s what I had to do.
Frodo, it will soon be yours.
Will it affect Frodo like that?
I don’t want him to have my ring!
It’s mine, my own, not his to have!
Oh, Bilbo, you stupid old thing!
YOu know that it’s not good for you,
you know how you hated it.
Yes, but I can still want it too!
No, I know I really shoudn’t.
I feel
funny-like,
I’m tingling inside.
I feel
sad-like,
I’m stretched and tired inside.
I’m going away on a journey,
I’ll probably never return.
The dwarves are following behind me,
I’ll see them if I turn.
Gandalf, I left it with you,
you said that’s what I had to do.
Frodo, it will soon be yours.

This night is so fresh and cooling.
That breeze is blowing just right.
Oh my! Am I really feeling
true happiness tonight?
Oh, I haven’t felt this way so long,
I feel like I could jump and sing!
Gandalf, maybe you were right
to say that I should leave the ring.
I feel
funny-like,
I’m tingling inside.
I feel
sad-like,
I’ve lost something inside.
I’m going away on a journey,
I’ll surely never return.
The dwarves are following behind me,
I smile as I turn.
Gandalf, I left it with you,
I’m glad that’s what you said to do.
Frodo, it will soon be yours.
