Beren from Company of the Ring: Tol Galen emailed me with the news that he’s received an email from the “dialect and creative Language” coaches who worked with all the actors in the upcoming Lord of the Rings films to create their specific speech peculiarities… It’s great to know that we’ll not be able to place a character’s speech geographically–it will surely add to the realism of Middle-earth, the realism that we demand if it is to take us far away from the cushioned seats and sticky floors of the theaters we’ll all be crammed into!
Here’s an excerpt:
Bilbo and Frodo will speak their dialogue using “Received Pronunciation” (or RP as it is commonly known) which is a non-regional accent of Standard English.
The actor playing Pippin will not be heard on-screen using his native Glasgow accent. Merry and Sam will speak with an accent from South West England without any other influences. No character will sound as if they come from a city in the modern world.
