Sean Astin (“Sam”) joins dozens of film and television stars, elected officials and business leaders will take over the children’s section of the Central Library on Friday, September 7 at 11am and read one-on-one to second-graders to mark the first week of school by bringing attention to the issue of literacy, and highlight an innovative grass-roots program promoting childhood literacy in Los Angeles.
Among those scheduled to attend are: the cast of “Boston Public,” including Chi McBride, Fyvush Finkel, Anthony Heald, Leslie Jordan and Rashida Jones; Henry Winkler; Ben Stein; Steven Weber; Selma Blair (“Legally Blond”); Lisa Loeb; Rebecca DeMornay; Sean Astin (“The Lord of the Rings”); Jennifer Grey; Mike Binder (“The Mind of the Married Man”); Kurt Rambis (former L.A. Laker); members of the casts of “The West Wing,” “Felicity,” “Providence” and “Murder in Small Town X”; Joshua Malina (“Sports Night”); Alfred Molina; Elliot Gould; Monty Hall; Joanna Gleason; Ron Rifkin; Evan and Jaron; Casey Wasserman of the L.A. Avengers; Jill and Tom Barad; Roy Romer, superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD); Caprice Young, school board president; and other surprise guests.

KOREH L.A., the Los Angeles Jewish Coalition for Literacy, trains and places volunteer reading partners in LAUSD schools for at-risk students grades K-3. After only two years, KOREH L.A. has trained more than 1,200 reading partners and is in more than 40 local public schools.
