Two of children’s literature’s favorite characters will be duking it out on movie screens next year. J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings will be released in 2001.

“THESE TWO FILMS will be going head to head,” said Adrian Bourne, managing director of the trade division of HarperCollins Publishers.
Borne said the Lord of the Rings movie will be filmed in New Zealand and will be a combination of live action and computer-generated effects.
The first of the three films from the Lord of the Rings trilogy is called The Fellowship of the Ring and is supposed to be released before Christmas next year. The other two will be released later.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is also due out at the end of next year.
