Rings sound recordist off to the Oscars

Hammond Peek’s usual tuxedo hire specialist can expect a call any day as the Oscar nominee gets set for his next awards night.
The Christchurch production sound recordist is hoping it will be second time lucky at the Oscars on March 23, where he is part of the sound team nominated for an Oscar for Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers.
Last time round the Lord of the Rings sound team was pipped by Black Hawk Down, and this time he reckons Chicago – even though he hasn’t seen the film – has to be the favourite in the sound category.
“Two Towers has a fantastic sound track and I would love it to win. But it’s an American award and Chicago is an American film.
“There are a lot of politics in the voting at the Oscars. I’ll have my fingers and toes crossed – you never know.”
While the first Lord of the Rings film didn’t win the sound Oscar last time, it did win the Cinema Audio Society’s top award.
“We’re up for the CAS award for the Two Towers, and it’s a great one to be in contention for because it’s the peer group award,” he said.
Whatever the outcome, the Oscars “are a hoot” and he is looking forward to the trip.
