Lord of The Rings special effects master Richard Taylor passed on some of his Oscar-winning movie secrets to a group of Huntly students yesterday.
Mr Taylor – who won two Oscars for best makeup and best visual effects in Lord of The Rings – took part in a video conference with Year 13 students from Te Wharekura O Rakaumangamanga.
The conference was set up by Te Papa, and coincides with the museum’s exhibition titled The Lord of the Rings Motion Picture Trilogy.
Hobbits’ feet and how Mr Taylor achieved his success were the main talking points at the conference. But the Year 13 students also had to present a video, using special effects, to Mr Taylor.
“I think the kids got a big buzz getting advice from him (Mr Taylor),” said Leslie Leevey, a development manager at Te Wharekura O Rakaumangamanga.
Students from eight secondary schools were involved in the conference. The schools are part of an Education Ministry initiative to raise the achievement level of Maori learners.
