OFFICIAL ‘LORD OF THE RINGS’ WEB SITE
WHAT: “Perilous to us all are the devices of an art deeper than we possess ourselves,” warns the wizard Gandalf in “The Two Towers,” the second book of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. Good advice for the team turning J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy trilogy into three special effects-laden movies, the first of which opens in December. Excited and worried fans have been discussing the films for months on dozens of Web sites. Now, finally, the films’ official site has opened, with cast bios, production notes, images, downloadable stuff and an interactive map of the Middle Kingdom — but where’s the theatrical trailer? Only in theaters until Friday, then it premieres on the site.
ADDED ATTRACTION: Director Peter Jackson answers fans’ questions on video (camera trickery, he explains, will make hobbits look small; actors are normal size). Other clips offer behind-the-scenes information vital to fans. In one, makeup artist Hil Irwin discusses the color of hobbit toe hairs: Frodo’s match Sam’s, Merry’s match Pippin’s. News you can use.
WHY: In case the first installment is a disappointment — please, no! — let’s enjoy the hype now.
