New Line Cinema‘s Frequency DVD features a Lord of the Rings web browser, wallpaper and screensaver, among other extras.
PC extras showing up on discs

New Line’s Frequency DVD at first seems typical of the studio’s Platinum Series.
The disc, released Tuesday, includes two levels of surround sound, deleted scenes, a making-of feature, three audio commentaries and animated galleries.
But it’s the PC extras, however, that hint at a new direction for DVD releases.
The disc features a Lord of the Rings Web browser, wallpaper and screensaver, and a playable demo of Sierra Studios’ Ground Control video game.
These extras have no connection to Frequency, a movie that stars Dennis Quaid and Jim Caviezel battling time and a serial killer.
Lord of the Rings is one of the most anticipated films of 2001. It’s likely a few fans with no interest in Frequency will nab the disc just to get a jump on Rings secrets. And it’s an easy bet that many DVD owners play video games.
“We’re tapping all the options out there, so that on these discs you want to go back and back again,” said Mike Mulvihill, vice president of content development for New Line Home Video.
