TORONTO (CP) – The magic makers who created the special effects for Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring will attend the Banff international television festival in June to demonstrate their screen wizardry. The New Zealand-based post-production companies include Weta Workshop, Weta Digital, the Film Unit and Oktober.
The film version of the first of the J.R.R. Tolkien Rings trilogy was released last year and quickly became one of the biggest film hits of all time. It won four Oscars, including one for best special effects.
The second film in the series, The Two Towers, is scheduled for theatrical release this December with the third, Return of the King, slated for Christmas 2003.
The Banff visit – scheduled for June 11 – is one of three North American venues for the F/X group, arranged with the help of Investment New Zealand.
Meanwhile, the Banff festival will also be honouring veteran Hollywood TV producer Gary David Goldberg, creator, writer and producer of such classic series as Family Ties, Spin City and Brooklyn Bridge.
Goldberg has been named the 2002 winner of Banff’s Award of Excellence, which will be presented along with the annual Rockie Awards on June 10.
