HOLLYWOOD (Variety) – Cate Blanchett is in negotiations to co-star opposite Kevin Spacey in “The Shipping News” for director Lasse Hallstrom (”Chocolat”).
Based on the 1994 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Annie Proulx, the Miramax project centers on a man (Spacey) who tries to piece his life together after a marriage to a woman who has run off with his two daughters and sold them into prostitution.
Blanchett will play the role of Spacey’s ex-wife, Petal Bear. Shooting is scheduled to start prior to potential writers’ and actors’ strikes this summer.
Blanchett is currently in theaters with “The Gift” a southern ensemble thriller co-starring Keanu Reeves, Giovanni Ribisi and Katie Holmes. She wrapped production on New Line’s ”Lord of the Rings” late last year. She is attached to star in Warner Bros.’ upcoming “Charlotte Gray.”
Her other recent credits include “Elizabeth,” “An Ideal Husband” “Pushing Tin” and “The Talented Mr. Ripley”
