Tolkien fans have craved a Lord of the Rings adaptation for decades, but Elijah Wood, who stars as hobbit Frodo Baggins, said the wait was worth it. Today’s visual effects resulted in a more realistic rendering of Tolkien’s Middle-earth, Wood said. And the epic no longer carries political baggage it picked up 30 or 40 years ago, he said.
“I don’t think this could have been done any earlier,” Wood said. “In the ’60s and ’70s, there was a lot of pop culture that referenced Lord of the Rings. It was used in reference to Vietnam and was embraced by the hippie movement. If the film were done back then, you would have had social issues of that time tacked on to it.
“Now we’re free of those tie-ins, so it makes for a clearer depiction of Tolkien and his story.”
