Making the Blade – Who is Forging the Weapons for the Films?

by Sep 30, 1999Lord of the Rings (Movies)

Dr. Jim Hrisoulas of the Salamander Armoury has posted a message to our messageboard imparting a bit of info on creating the weaponry for Peter Jackson’s films. Here’s what he had to say:

It has been brought to my attention that a rumor somehow got started that I am making some weaponry for this movie series. This is NOT the case. I did make several sword blades for a special effects firm that are to be hilted and used in either stills or in advertising. As far as I know all the weaponry employed in the making of these films are being fashioned locally in New Zealand for logistic reasons.

That makes sense–the weaponry for the film most assuredly will not be actual steel blades, but created from plastic and rubber (who remembers the floppy axe from the end of Braveheart?)–but for advertising, they’d want the highest quality steelwork for the necessary close-ups.

Check out his entire post here. And don’t forget to check out the Salamander Armoury–those weapons are absolutely beautiful!
