“You know the drill: A good trailer can help sell a bad movie (Godzilla); a bad trailer can help kill a good movie (Wonder Boys). We’ve got the lowdown on the 10 best and 10 worst clips currently hyping a movie near you.”
3. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (New Line)
Release Date: December 19
The Plot: A ring imbued with the power of the Dark Lord Sauron falls into the possession of young hobbit Frodo Baggins (Wood), who, with eight companions, sets out across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, the only place the evil band of gold can be destroyed.
What the Trailer Shows: J.R.R. Tolkien 101. Even if you don’t know Arwen from Aragorn, the teaser lays out the basics of the epic tale. But it also plays up the magical imagery for true fans, who have been waiting years to hear the name “Gandalf” uttered onscreen.
First Impressions: That they could have shown Frodo doing excerpts from Riverdance, and this clip still would have been a smash.
Why It Works: Because you don’t have to know LOTR lore backward and forward to get sucked into the quintessential hero’s journey played out in the clip.
The Buzz: Frodo mojo is working in a big way. After seeing the preview, the online LOTR community has been waxing euphoric about…the casting! the music! the direction! (Is your obsession a wee bit out of control?) Be sure to check out a frame-by-frame analysis of the trailer.
