Errors in Middle-earth – Errata for Lord of the Rings

Tolkien himself was a perfectionist. We know this from the amount of work that went into the stories we all love. He was never able to bring himself to finish the Silmarillion because of the level of detail that was needed.

Many people are also aware that both the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings have both gone through several editions where significant changes were made in the later editions.

What many people don’t realize is that there are still many errors in the Lord of the Rings. One of our Messageboard regular’s, Halbarad, sent me a list of errors that he has compiled while reading through the History of Middle Earth series.

In this series Christopher Tolkien makes note of many textual errors. Halbarad has compiled this into a list and sent it in to me. He has also noted in his e-mail that he is certain that this list is in no way complete and he knows of several other errors.

If you happen to see an error that is not on this list send it in to or head on over to the Messageboard by clicking here and post your own error. We will discuss it and amend our Tolkien errata.
