Ian Holm as Bilbo BagginsSeems that the rumour that Ian Holm will narrate The Hobbit has found some more solid footing.
At the Weta Cave in New Zealand where Alan Lee was engaged in a book signing, Jack at The Noldor Blog spoke to his elusive “contact” who seemed to seriously imply that Ian Holm’s narration of The Hobbit was a foregone conclusion–nearly a sealed deal.
If true, it’s not surprising. In addition to portraying Bilbo in The Lord of the Rings, Holm voiced Frodo in the BBC radio drama of The Lord of the Rings made in the early 80s. He has a certain natural voice that lends itself to something like a voiceover–it’s not too overpowering, but not expressionless.
I doubt, though, that the film will feature a narrator. I imagine that–if he does do some narration work–it will be more similar to the voiceover Galadriel had in the beginning of Peter Jackson’s Fellowship of the Ring: an introduction to the film, but not a persistent voice through out.
