John Rhys-Davies Pines for Bygone Days… and a Role in The Hobbit?

John Rhys-Davies at The Two Towers PremierJohn Rhys-Davies at The Two Towers PremierThe Belfast Telegraph recently spoke with John Rhys-Davies, where he revealed that he longs for a role of some sort in The Hobbit.  It’s not secret, though, that he has NO desire to get back into the makeup chair (he had strong allergic reactions to the prosthetics and fluids used to glue them to his face).

Here’s what he said:

“I have to confess when I heard they were doing it, there was a big lump of nostalgia.”

“It was a very strange feeling going back and seeing so many old faces. Seeing Ian McKellen and young Gollum [Andy Serkis].

“It was like going back to your old school where you were being a person of real importance and they treated you courteously, but you’re no longer part of it. It really plucks the heart strings.

“So I grovelled as obsequiously as I could, to no avail, but Peter’s a very merciful chap… Let’s put it this way. I have been sending pushy, grovelling signals.”

And the actor is very excited about what to expect from The Hobbit.

“Four weeks ago I went down [to New Zealand] and saw the making of The Hobbit. What I saw down there I think means almost a quantum change in the way films are made. I think after this Hobbit comes out, filmmaking will never be the same.

“The decision to shoot and project in 48 frames per second is extraordinary and an improvement of image that will become the new standard I think.”

Honestly, I’m getting a bit tired of all the cameos in The Hobbit now.  The Hobbit shouldn’t feel like a film recalling LOTR–actually LOTR is more The Hobbit 2.0.  Let’s drop the cameos, folks, right?
