Dan M. emailed me the link to an article entitled “Online Poll says Collins Irish Person of century”. Here’s what it said about Tolkien (the poll was taken at times2000.com, a millennial eve celebration site):
The literature categories were dominated by James Joyce. He has been voted both Writer and Irish Writer of the Century, with W.B.Yeats and Samuel Beckett trailing him in the latter case. Joyce’s novel Ulysses is Book of the Century, ahead of J.R.R.Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye.
Let me be the first to say that this is literary company I’ve truly never seen Tolkien in! Kinda neat, I think!
