As previously reported on Tolkien Online, an exciting new dance work based on the story of Beren and Luthien is coming soon, and now has its own website!

The world premiere of The Silmaril will take place April 25-27, 2003 at Clowes Memorial Hall of Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Silmaril is a new full-length ballet which depicts the forbidden love of Beren, the mortal hero, and Lúthien, the immortal elf-maiden. It tells of their conquest of a stolen jewel, the magical Silmaril, from the grip of the Lord of Evil and his minions. This epic production is already attracting national attention.

The Silmaril will feature the pre-professional dancers of the Butler Ballet in original choreography by Butler Dance Faculty. The ballet combines the talents of all four departments of Butler University’s Jordan College of Fine Arts (JCFA), including a commissioned score by Butler University composer Frank Felice on an original libretto by Ellen Denham. The original score will be played by the Butler Symphony Orchestra, the set design will be executed by Prof. Madeleine Sobota of the Theatre Department, and WTBU will be documenting the creation of the ballet. The Indianapolis-based MotionWear company is the corporate sponsor for this world premiere event.

The librettist of the ballet, Ellen Denham, was recently awarded an Individual Artist Grant from the Indiana Arts Commission for her work on The Silmaril.

The ballet is already being discussed on the Tolkien Online Messageboard. CLICK HERE to read it!

You can also read more about it on the criticaldance.com bulletin board.

Artistic Director Stephan Laurent and Librettist/Dramaturgist Ellen Denham will be giving a presentation on the ballet at Dragon*Con in Atlanta over Labor Day Weekend.
