My Dad and I recently went to The American Numismatic Association World’s Fair of Money (an international coin show) in New York City. The Royal Canadian Mint was one of the mints there and they had a display with “The Fellowship of the Ring Reel Coins” on it. It was only a mock up.
Later on we went back and they actually had the coins there!! It’s a set of five coins: Strider, Gandalf, Frodo, Gimli and Legolas on the front with their names on the front as well and with black speech on the back (I think it says “the One Ring,” but I’m not sure) in a little book.
The coins on one side of it and the other side is a picture of Rivendell on one page, Bag End on page and it comes with stickers of Strider, Gandalf, Frodo, Legolas and Gimli. When it comes out this month it will be $9.95(US).
I tried to take a picture, but they would not let me because of copyright law (or something to that effect). The funny thing is that last year when the same show was in Atlanta, I asked the person at the Canadian Mint if they were going to make Lord of the Rings coins as part of their Reel Coinz series and that person said they were in negotiations with the movie companies.
The Canadian Mint also has Reel Coinz for: Shrek, Harry Potter, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, Jurassic Park III and The Grinch.
On a side note, the French mint is selling replicas of the One Ring in gold, silver and bronze. They will be releasing it three times-one for each movie. The gold is $500(US), silver and bronze $50 (US)each. I tried to find it on their website, but I could not find it, so I sent them an email and they have not responded yet.
