Tolkien’s Eleventy-first Birthday on Friday
The Star Online – December 31, 2003
WELLINGTON: The “eleventy-first birthday” of the late JRR Tolkien will be celebrated around the world on Friday – because the author thought that occasion was important for his hobbit character Bilbo Baggins.
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born on Jan 3, 1892, and Tolkien Society New Zealand president Natalie Sisson says that 2003 marks a special anniversary for Tolkien.
“One hundred and eleven years is significant because this is how we were introduced to the story of The Fellowship of the Ring – Bilbo Baggins was celebrating his `eleventy-first birthday’ with a great party.”
Sisson says people around the world would celebrate Tolkien’s birthday with a toast at 9pm local time (5pm Malaysian time) on Friday.
Wellington has proclaimed itself the Capital of Middle Earth since the major success of the first two Lord of the Ring movies, which were made here. – AFP
